hi every one just wondering if your feeling creative just b4 Xmas i have been working from home for the last 12 months and have just got new premises they are on the corner of one of the busiest roads into town there are 3 large windows 2 @ 2500 wide x 1800 high and 1 3500 wide i have sat up for the last 2 nights thinking of designs for the windows to make the most impact but nothing seems to look right i do general sign work, vans, not done yet but could do car graphics, banners, digital printing and printed tee shirts for hen nights and such things
anyone got any good ideas for the windows to maximize my business
at this time i have no colors or fonts i have to stick to company name is just signs and this will be on a large sign above the windows

    My first thoughts are;

Create a Logo of your Co. Name. Something custom and really nice.
The rest, keep simple and clean, getting the the most important point across.
Or go bonkers with prints… think about what type of clientle you want to attract, and think of what would impress them.

I too have been looking at a couple of shops near me to attract more passing trade for the merchandising side of our business.

The likely candidate has 2 large windows with a set of stile and rail double doors with large vision panels between the windows.

I can’t be a*rs?d doing any design work for them myself, anyone like to do it for me?

(This is all said very tongue in cheek, by the way)

because your making signs for other people you think yours has to better and differnt perhaps i should keep it very simple

Doctors aren’t healthier, or live longer than anyone else, so why should a sign maker have better signs? 😀

I wasn’t insinuating to make your logo Arrogant. My thoughts were that it should be some of your nicer work, to project a competent image. Something appealing. I’d prefer thinking clean, instead of simple. some of the most appealing signs I’ve seen are very clean (simple).. but not average or typical… not just a font typed out.
Not saying that I’m right or maybe I’m not even close.. just my first thoughts.
in the words of Dan Antonelli.. “sell them your design” people can go anywhere to get knock outs”

    i’ll shut up now…..

yeah, Dan has some skills to say the least. I have the book, but haven’t read it yet. He gave that advice to someone on letteville the other day.
I’m still working on Mike Steven’s mastering layout.. I’m going to be re-reading that for a while. Good Stuff!

    Back to the topic… Terry,
Just start looking around and seeing what you like. Every pic of something i like I save in a folder called “inspired”. A lot of that came from the portfolio here. I look at it frequently. Also, look at major magazines with ad’s done by bigger agencies who spend lots of money on market research.
Most of what i said earlier is just what’s been on my mind for marketing my business, based on advice I’ve got recently from various people.
.. oh, and whatever Peter says, read it twice. He’s a smart Cookie!

I’ve got a couple of the Big Book of Logos

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0688178 … eader-page

Always going back to them and leafing through the pages for inspiration as they are full of good ideas.

    Terry,

I think you should create a simple easily adaptable logo

    http://www.ingram-publishing.co.uk/page … ro_art.htm

    Example 2
    Creative Symbols

adapting existing shapes is an easy way to start…….

    Cheers

I would change your business name. Signs are not just signs but can be works of art. “Just signs” seems a little derogatory and the name I think undersells the nature of signs. If you’re looking to design a new logo why not take the opportunity to re-name your business at the same time. You say you bought the business as a going concern so hopefully you will not be offended by my comments as presumably you didn’t come up with this name in the first place 😳

    thank you Terry,
I’m still Kinda’ Green compared to a lot of people here.
I started hand lettering in high school, but never did much. couldn’t develope the brush skills like I wanted to, but i was great with a pencil and markers freehand. did some airbrushing in college.
I started dabbling in vinyl around the mid ninetys just applying, but still never worked for a sign shop, i would just do jobs for my friends, once or twice a year, sketching the layout and getting vinyl from a local shop.
I learned corel first, but i got Flexi when i bought my equipment and started the business in the summer of ’02. Now i’m trying to learn photoshop, but mostly i use Flexi for all vinyl, corel for all print, or a combination of them.
It’s only this year that i’ve started to focus on developing my skills. Books, uksb, letterville, and a lot of people have helped me. It’s a long process.
I’m really trying to work on design, as well as business skills now.. I’m tired of being broke!

Thanks again for the compliment, keep seeking out and looking at other peoples work. Ther are tons of Fantastic people to get inspired from.
