can anyone help please with layout for a fleet of vans?
Posted by Phill Fenton on September 25, 2005 at 1:51 pmI am designing a new full colour layout for a customer. He’s asked that we incorporate a colour fade from purple to blue as his company is a heating engineering company. The final design will feature on his main sign and a number of vans. I am still new to designing for print and cut but this is what I have come up with so far.
Any comments or advice is appreciated 😀

fading from colours can be awkward on print, can cause banding if not done correctly. I would be thinking how how close the two colours Blue and Purple are and seeing them fade together before showing customer.

What I find is I tend to design larger and shrink it to fitseems to work better
Recently had a contractor visit with hia van which was digitally done.
Pixelated it was shocking it was Dunno why people accept that type of prints.Goop
Oh looks OK to me phill

I like it Phil, appart from the grey shaddow, if it needs one what about a very pale shade of the purple??

nice design 😀
i agree with the grey shadow being droppped phil, and i would also make the purple band (central heating) a bit smaller as the company name is a bit lost 😀

Phil, Change the grey outline to a grey shadow like the black but fade out the grey to nothing, will look great then.
Also reduce the band as Nik say’s.L J

Looks OK Phill.
Are you printing onto white or clear? What will you do about cutting around the soft shadow? Reason I ask is that I did something very similar last week and I had to cover the whole van panel with the clear vinyl in order to maintain the nice edges to the drop shadow. If you know what I mean! -
I know what you mean Andy and to be honest I’m not sure of the best way to tackle it. I think the soft shadow is a great effect but it creates its own problems when printing and cutting as you have said. For the sign – I will probably print onto white and cover the whole panel. For the vans I think I might print onto clear and create a contour around the soft shadow. That’s assuming all the vans are white of course 😕 If not I’ll have to think again.
However, I would welcome any advice on the best way to print and cut a soft shadow. 😀

On the test piece I did, the clear changed the shade of white on the background a bit. Also, the vinyl and laminate ends up quite thick and a line was noticeable around the shadow. In the end I covered the whole panel and trimmed to the edges.

Design looks fine Phil,
just my huble though, and you are probably confined by the customer, as to colour, but I would try and go for more traditional warm colours (yellows reds and oranges) the design as is, suggests more for an air con firm.
I wouldnt worry about printing on white, if the vans are white, the contour cut will be hardly noticed. If the vans are a dark colour, then you may have a problem. you will either have to print the white on clear our print on white and be left with an abrupt finish to the grey shadow

I agree with you about the colours Peter. It’s too “Steely” for my liking (Not for a central heating company anyway). Perhaps once he’s seen how these colours look together I will be able to convince him to go for warmer colours.
