can anyone help me with making a DIY A-board please?
Posted by Ciaran Rigney on 16 August 2009 at 17:55Hey Everyone,
Has anyone ever made a DIY pavement sign?
If so what materials did you use and how did you construct it?Any other ideas or suggestions also much appreciated.

its cheaper to buy them, its quicker and they look batter.
unless you have a specific traditional style to replicate ide buy them in.materials… Plywood, hinges, chain/cable, 1.5 x1.5 inch or 2×2 inch lengths of timber for framing. undercoat and gloss paint.
there are lots of A-board suppliers listed on the UKSB TOOLBAR.

Thanks Rob
Do you reckon i would need marine ply?….or would the gloss paint be sufficient?
I know what you mean about the costing, i suppose it would come out around the same + more man hours wasted….not wroth the hassle

I have made them as I could not get the size I needed. I used WPB grade plywood (3/4") painted in with gloss paint. Instead of chain I used timber battens as they are all used in very windy locations. It prevents them from blowing over (but wander around the pavement instead now :o)

I use 12mm WBP ply
Get your timber supplier to cut the panels
You can get 6 panels at 24" x 32" out of a 8ft x 4ft sheet
The legs can be 2" x 2" softwood planed
Cut the legs at 38"
Glue and screw to panels
Then use ’45mm sharadized flap hinges’ available from http://www.ironmongeryonline.comPay attention to smoothing the edges of the ply (take care not to get splinters)
Prime well and make sure you rub down before applying any further coats
Undercoat and then gloss
