    Hi

I have a panel to replace thats in an ally frame and its riveted on the corners,
I was going to drill out the rivets to get to the panel but not sure the best way to re-fix the frame after.

    Cheers

I would just replace the rivets with rivets…
or self tappers if you expect to remove the panel on a regular basis

    Morning Peter
Thats what i was thinking but thought the hole would be big once i drill the old rivet out.

    Lee,

The hole that you are left with after drilling out the existing rivet needn’t be any bigger than the one that was there to start with (ok, maybe a nanometer or two). The rivet head is bigger than the hole remember, so drill away with a ‘smaller than the rivet head’ drill bit and you should (should) have no problems. Careful not to push too hard though and (like I do far too often) snap the drill bit.

    Cheers!

You don’t need to drill right through the rivet. I use a drill bigger than the core of the rivet but smaller than the overall diameter of the head. Just carefully apply pressure with the drill until the rivet head falls off. Then you can tap the old rivet inwards and out of the hole.

Make sure you remove the rivets in the top and bottom of the frame (and not the two on the end piece) otherwise you will still not be able to get the panel out without removing both corner pieces completely.

You may find it’s hung or that there is enough play to lift it up and pull it out of the lower frame. You may also get away with taking just one end of the frame off so don’t give yourself more work than you need.
