  • Can anyone give me an example of cuthead positioning?

    Hi Guys,

Got the Signlab demo through (thanks Brian) and was having a look around.

One thing i have noticed is there doesn`t seem to be clear method of cut head postioning like i`m used to Cutboy. (Well at least not clear to me heh)

The fact that it is a demo and won`t allow me to cut and experiment doesn`t exactly help but in Cutboy i was able to tell the plotter where to park and wait for the next command i gave it. It was called "Head Placing" and you simply checked a box telling it where to start the next cut from, i.e. Next Row, Next Column, Home Point etc

Can anyone give me a brief example of how it works with Signlab?. I read on another forum that there can be a x-axis problem with some Roland machines and i have a PNC-1100. (Typical 🙂 )

Below is an example of what i`m looking for

    ___
    | p |——————————————————-
    | l |
    | o | direction of vinyl–>>>>>>
    | t |
    | t |
    | e |(need second line cut here)
    | r |FIRST LINE OF TEXT CUT HERE (Don`t want second line here)
    |___|——————————————————-

It seems to suggest that if you use the "stack option", you can cut 2 of the same item but i don`t want it to do this, i want to cut an entirely different line of text but i want it to begin above this first line, not at the end of it in the next colum.

Any information on this would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Rod

On a Roland cutter you have to press ROTATE before you select setup.
This alters the axis reference of the vinyl in the plotter and makes Signab cut exactly as you have shown on your example.
Just place all the items to cut in a group as you have shown. Tip, draw a rectangle on screen the same height as your measured width of cut. Then place the items within that boundary. If you are using 500 width vinyl then around 465mm is the cuttable width. On-screen you are looking at height as being the Y axis whereas on your plotter it is the physical cutting width available.
From the cut menu select SORT and select horizontally so that items are cut across the vinly width in order of closest to the platten, as opposed to vertically which would cut in the manner which would cut in order closest to the bottom edge of the roll. This will minimise vinyl travel through the rollers.
Confused? Yes because of having to swap the axis reference for a Roland.
Do a practice on some small lines of text.

You can also force a sequence order by selecting the first cut, then right click, select start sequence, then select each object to create a cut order. After the last one click on screen. All items will now be cut in the order you just selected.

Rod as a matter of interest, have you ever tried cutting direct from within Coreldraw. if not You can download drivers from http://www.rolanddg.co.uk . I, like yourself used to use Cutboy but now I cut and print direct from corel and find it has a number of advantages over Cutboy

    (?)
    Maybe I’ve read this wrong?

Signlab will cut to exactly how you position on the workspace.
    (or anywhere in fact)
Just position and select the items you want to cut and where they are to cut and simply just cut.

If you want to, set the vinyl size you’re using and you’ll see on a preview where the text is in relation to your vinyl size. In the cut section you can spin it around to fit to width or length.
As I said earlier, maybe I’ve just read your problem wrong . 😕

select “cut” at the top of the screen.
then click “plotter setup” in here you will find some settings.
make sure your page size is set. Y = width of vinyl capable. x= say 300 inches.

i maybe getting your problem wrong, if im not..

in plotter setup select the radial button “origin” under “end point
next to it click “upper left” under “origin”

when you cut a line of text it should finish above the line cut and at the beginning again..

    hope this helps 😉

Well with the Roland PNC950/960 you MUST press ROTATE on the plotter before SETUP to set the cutting origin at the lower left hand as shown in the earlier illustration.

First thing, you should be able to cut from the Signlab demo. It will resize the output so that it is not useable, but it should cut OK for testing.

To cut as you wish you will need to set the END POINT in the Plotting Defaults to ORIGIN. (This will make the plotter return to it’s start point after the job is cut).

There are two ways to then achieve what you want to do.
1/ You can use the X or Y Move values in plotting defaults to move the plotter head prior to cutting. ie if you have just cut a piece of 50mm text and wish to cut above it you just enter a value greater than the 50mm in the Y move and it will cut above the previous text.
2/ In PLOTTING DEFAULTS set the cut area to SignBlank and Selected.
Now set the Signblank height to the width of material you have available and length to a reasonable amount.
With it set this way when you plot, the objects will be cut at their position on the Signblank (relative to the 0,0 lower left corner of the Signblank). So you can position them where you want them to cut.

As previous posters have mentioned you need to have the axis rotated on the plotter for this to work best. On the PNC 1100 you need to lift the pinch rollers and then look at the display on the plotter, select <rotate> and it should say <RO-90>, if not use the arrows and enter keys to change it.

    Hope this isn’t too complicated.

    Ray
