  • Can anybody suggest a supplier for aluminium angle?

Posted by Kevin Mahoney on December 4, 2013 at 10:34 am

    Hi everyone.
After a week of trials with my new Steeltrak, I think I’m ready to start making my own trays.
Could anyone suggest a good supplier for the aluminium brackets please, I’ve choked at some of the prices I’ve been given!
    Many thanks in advance.

I would just google for aluminium stockholders in your area. All will stock it.

    Cheers

I tend to use aluminium warehouse for lengths of profile. They aren’t always the quickest to process orders so I tend to buy a bit in advance. Prices are reasonable & they will deliver up to 5 metre lengths although a lot of their stock is 2.5 mtr lengths.

    Thanks for that guys.
My local supplier is a few pennies under the aluminium warehouse price, so I take it back, will go back & try a little of their humble pie.
Dear stuff this ally, Cherwell must be giving it away

To be honest it is probably just the quantity you are buying. It would be totally different if you were buying in 100 lengths.

I suppose it would make sense for me to stock 50 metres at any given time, got a price of under a fiver a metre. I guess I’m just getting tight in my old age

Try RIGHTONS – always found them pretty good although alu-angle can be a bit limited in sizes available.

Other thing to remember Kevin is that if you use your local supplier over time you may build up a better price based on the quantity you buy from them.
Aluminium isn’t the cheapest of materials to buy your right, compare it to say steel prices & it seems expensive.

I’ve always had the trays from Cherwell. Brilliant quality & comes with the aluminium brackets so I’ve never bought aluminium at all.
Now with the steeltack, I feel compelled to doing my own but I cant remember the last one I did that was less than 8′ so Cherwell needn’t worry too much yet.
Just wondering how to get 5mtr lengths into the van. You know as soon as you cut it a job will come in when you need it bigger!

That’s a good contact there, Thank you David.
haven’t dealt with them for donkeys when I was an apprentice.
Got them down to £2.75 a metre if I have 50 metres.

What size angle is that Kevin? If you do a lot of this sort of work then 50 mtrs isn’t really that much, 4 or 5 jobs at most probably.

The Cherwell profile is about 35mm x 35mm x 3mm. Rightons stock it for the best price so far, deliver to Worcester every week for a tenner so holding boat loads of stock doesn’t make sense really. Added bonus is they seem to be falling over themselves to supply me with composite sheet for peanuts.
All of my posts seem to veering towards money in this festive season, hope I don’t get any ghosts visiting me in the wee hours, I’m really not that tight, I’m just a signmaker. Know what I mean?

What were Rightons quoting on (as I’m about to order a load for myself).

Usually get 1 3/4" x 1/8" rather than the wee profiles – bit dearer but bags of support and virtually no flex / sag as you install longer lengths.

What’s the aluminium face thickness on the composite they are trying to sell you Kevin? Prices vary a lot depending on how thick it is.
If you are looking to make trays then it is something you need to think about, the thinner face film on hoarding board & what some companies call their lite version are to thin * you will gets the front face cracking when you try to bend to shape.

Crossed that bridge a few days ago sir, thought I’d bought a dodgy steeltrak as it woud cut thin & thick on the composite, then tried genuine dibond & worked a treat.
The silly thing is, when I bought hoarding grade, I naturally assumed I was making a huge saving as it was only for flat panel work. Turns out I was saving myself a whopping £3.50 per sheet. So much for frugality

Incidentally, that was for 1.5" x 1.5" x 1/8" thick. Same gauge that we always have off our regular supplier. I generally have 50mm returns so its ideal for me.

Kevin it comes in more than 2 flavors :lol1: :lol1:
Hoarding board has a face thickness of about 150 microns, lite versions have a thickness of about 200 microns & better quality boards are 300 microns or more.
You really need a board with a 300 micron face thickness for consistent results.
Just check with them what the thickness is before buying.
If hoarding board was only 3.50 a sheet more then it may well be a lite version your being quoted for.

Thanks for the word of caution David.
Doesn’t it always seem that adding another string to your bow is always more complicated than it first looks?

Apologies, I meant Martin of course. Been on the phone with a David just & he’s spoiled my flow!

    Thanks for that Stuart.
Not had many dealings with Ashby. Every time I’ve called with an enquiry, I’ve never had a response. Chased them on occasion but was always met with confusion as to where my enquiry had gone.
Usually get my posts & panels from ASD metals. Used to have a branch on my doorstep but they’ve moved that department over to the Black country now.
Cant face spaghetti junction anymore, not even if they gave it to me

Ashby seemed to go through a blip about a year or so ago and I even complained on here that enquires were not being replied to.
However it seemed to be temporary and I now get quotes back usually within an hour from either phone or email queries.
Many others on here recommend other suppliers and I have often sought other quotes but actually find Ashby now cheaper than many alternatives.

As an addition I find their print prices very good when wanting Full colour digital prints for a sign, so at the moment I give them the thumbs up .

Will maybe give them a shout next time.
I don’t do much post & rail now, if its going to be double sided, I prefer to notch trays around the posts, looks much better from the sides
