  • Can anybody recommend an external hard-drive please?

Posted by Warren Beard on February 4, 2009 at 10:23 am

    Hi All

I want to get a second external hard drive that does automatic back-ups, I currently have a small one connected to my Fire Wire which simply copy all my files to every week or so so am looking for a 2nd one that will do it automatically so I know it will always be up to date.

Can anybody recommend a good drive that comes with good software for doing this?

    cheers

I have been using 2 buffalo link stations for a couple of years without a problem (networked) one for each computer, and although they come with backup software, I use acronis to back up both complete systems daily,
I also have 2 USB seagate drives, which I use to copy my important documents to using the back2 zip as recomended by Rob and a similar program I have used for many years.

The thing with acronis, if your comp goes down, in theory (though I have never had to test it,) you can reinstall your complete OS whilst working from the backup

Same as Peter, I use a Buffalo Link Station, have done for 4 years, no problems, and you can actually copy to a separate usb drive off the Buffalo to take off site.

We just got a Buffalo in the office….sorry to jump on the band wagon! They seem really good.

I use the Maxtor OneTouch drives at home for automated backup and they’re great, although I just bought the latest model for someone else and the design has changed, looks cheap and nasty.

I also have a Lacie drive, it was far cheaper but doesn’t spin down so gets quite hot and is noisy compared to the Maxtors.

Plenty of baclkup software around, we use Memeo which is incredibly cheap but efficient. Ideally get software that can hadle incremental backups.

    Cheers,
    Justin 🙂

    on the mac?

I only manually back up to an external hard drive and every month or so do a dvd back up just in case my mac and external drive packed up at the same time 😕

I’ll probably just get one as mentioned above and see what software it comes with or try the one Rob posted.

    cheers

Hi Warren, on the Mac, it’s automatic every hour just plug and play, no messing.

How many of you keep off site backups? No point in keeping your backup drive with your main PC if someone decides to help themselves to the lot or if there is a fire.

I use a 1tb Thecus N299 network backup, with auto mirror 1tb drive.
Norton Ghost backups up my whole system by scheduled maintenance, and the N299 makes sure the second 1tb backs that up every time data is added.

I have my house PC’s on the network too, so will be getting a second one just for personal stuff, but it works great as I use it as a cheap server too, meaning that even when my work computers are off, my N299 is always on, so I can work from anywhere on the network….

    …if that makes sense 😕

I just press save to each hard disk and maybe to a usb key, and email my corel files to ,
myself so its on my mail server too, 4 backups done, not much time spent.
not ideal but never heard of Buffalo or such like so just do it manually

Pretty much how we do it here Shane, but with a LaCie 1Tb NAS drive.

Ihave offsite backup, we use windows live sync and the replocates files accross all computors in a share including my mac.

My documents on my workstation at work are copied to the server and mac and also my pc at home and laptop when on, this is all done automatically. this gives you a copy of the file in multiple locations the only downside that i can see is if you corrupt the file on any machine it will be the latest copy and get replicated out to all others, only saving grace on that is the pc that corruted the file will have a copy in its waste bin.

This is a free program for mac or pc only problem is mac do not like zip files for some reason.

    Regards

    Russell.

Hi Peter, yes this backs up automatically to an external hard drive, I always backup as well to my ipod before I leave for the day just in case.

    yes I’m on a mac (and no they don’t go wrong 😉 😉 😉 , touch wood :lol1: )

seriously though, I have heard the name "time machine" before so will check that out and see because if it’s for mac then all the better.

As for off-site back-up I want another drive to keep on the desk to do automatic back-ups and then my current Lacie drive will have periodic back-ups manually done and kept in my fire proof safe.

I’ll research the Time Machine before making any purchases.

    Thanks all.

    cheers

    well since your calling 😀

I have 2 mac routers but not the TC 😥 Although I am tempted to get the 1TB one at some point solely for backup of my system

TC itself is awesome on the macs but this hardware version is even better
