  • Can any red reflective be used for chapter 8 chevrons?

Posted by Steve McAdie on January 4, 2013 at 6:25 pm

The title says it all really. I have been given conflicting information which has got me a little confused. Some seems to sugest any red reflective will do whilst others say class ref 2 or above must be used. Anybody know for sure or is it just down to how you interpret it all.

it is all a bit confusing and seems to be changing slightly each year or two. 😕

All Emergency vehicles are conspicuity reflective.

Any vehicle that works on the motorways/highways, must use conspicuity markings.

Conspicuity = Honeycomb / diamond cell style reflective.

This is what i mean after watching the video and reading the 3m article i’m still non the wiser. (By the way Rob did you notice in the video they say to use soapy water.) Gill from Willy Smiths says in a post class ref 2 or above yet metamark have said their reflective is ok for chapter 8 chevrons but on their website it states that their reflective does not conform to either class ref 1 or 2 so if it is the case that you must use class ref 2 or higher then metamarks wouldn’t be up to the job.
To confuse me even more another signmaker has told me that a manufacturer of chevron kits told him any red reflective will do. I understand the conspicuous marking tape rules as they seem a lot clearer on the grade to be used.

I’m not even sure if the powers that be understand it either lol.
I use to do some work for a guy who did the escort vehicles for abnormal loads, he wanted red & white chevrons on the back of his vans & he was insistent even though I explained to him that you couldn’t use white on the back of a van & the reasons for it.
He use to work closely with different police forces both in Scotland & across the border & never once had any problems what so ever.

I have ordered some reflective and asked to make sure it was class ref 2 or above as to play safe but would like to know for sure for the future, can’t afford to fit non complying vinyl as it is for a very large customer, also they look to me for advice on vinyl matters and it doesn’t look good when i shrug my shoulders with a blank look on my face. Wish they could write the regs a bit clearer it not a lot to ask. I feel a phone call to the DFT coming on.

What’s the one that has to have the E mark on? I have some Orocal reflective that has an E mark in a circle.

That’s conspicuous tape Steve. From what I have read tonight Martin A is right retroreflective seems to be the thing.

    quote Stephen Morriss:

Stephen is correct, the NEW reflective from Oracal now has a visible brand to show it complies with new road traffic regulations.
it comes in cut vinyl grade and also printable grade. ive used a fair bit of it for some several orders.
exactly what new regulations it conforms to i am unsure, but it is a "higher grade" than the regular engineering grade most offer.
what i will add is, this is the best engineering grade reflective i have worked with in 22 years. weeds and applied like regular vinyl’s and CAN EASILY be removed without reflective paste being left behind or very difficult to remove at all.
it also has the largest range in reflective colours i have seen to date.
you do pay slightly more for it than the regular run of mill reflective s but i wouldnt even consider going back. the extra cost far outweighs the hassles.

all that said, i do not "think" the new branded Oracal reflective vinyls conform to the conspicuity films standards. if they did i doubt they would have purchased and now own Reflexite which now manufacture Oracal/Reflexite conspicuity films.

Thats good then because it is oralite that i have ordered not the standard oralite think it was 5900e or something like that. There is some new regs for traffic signage which comes in in July 2013 must have ce or something like that stamped on it. Also seems that class 2 is now referred to as ra2. Found that out searching for chapter 8 info. I think i know why it is all so confusing it’s because it is EU legislation.

You might all find this link helps to clear things up.

    http://www.williamsmith.co.uk/index.cfm … tentID=266

Also Steve you mention the new regulations re CE markings which are effective from July 2013. We will be doing a similar info sheet soon to let everyone know which types of signage it will affect. In a nut shell it will affect all new signage which is on private land used by the public……for example speed limit signage in supermarket car park’s, note I say new as from July 2013 so this will not affect existing signs.
