Humbrol aerosol paint, Frog Juice from Victory Design, but as Rob said Screenprinting ink is by far the best but messy and has to be thinned with dedicated thinners and you need compressor/gun to spray it and its highly flammable and unless you wear a mask when spraying the fumes will damage you lungs, you could try Createx AutoAir its a water based acrylic but again needs a compressor and airbrush.

you can use ink with a brush or small 6 inch roller. “as well as airgun/brush” i have done it many times. you can get a tin of appollo ink for about £10 i think and it lasts you months/years if you only dabble in painting on vinyl. you need a tin of thinners also but just ask when buying the ink what is best for your type of thing. thinners will be cheaper again.
mix a tiny amount in a tin and put the rest away… a small mask is required to prevent inhailing any fumes… a proper painters resperator if you are going to be working with it for any real time.
these can be picked up for about £20 from B&Q, if you intend doing this now and again, ide say just get the resperator. but for the one off…. a door open and a small mask will be fine.

if using a brush etc dont thinning down too much..
always leave it 24 hours to dry properly, even though it drys in a few minutes.
if bubbling up of the vinyl appears. leave it, by following morning it will be gone. (this will just be because you have a bit too much thinner in your ink.

hope this helps some… ide advise calling appollo inks and asking them for proper details on this process, it will keep yourself right if nothing else 😉

Krylon has an aerosol spraypaint called “Fusion”.
    It supposedly sticks to vinyl.
1-Shot makes a vinyl primer, but I have never tried it.
I use cheap spray-bombs from the hardware store
and spray over that with 1-Shot’s spray UV Clear.
(Spray BEFORE weeding, and draw a loose outline on your cut vinyl
with a Sharpie marker so that you can see where to spray the darn paint)
    Weed in about 2 hours.
I always wait a day before applying lo-tack transfer tape, and I apply wet.
I have also NEVER had a problem with painting vinyl with
    1-Shot and a brush.
    Love…..Jill

On many occasions we have painted vinyl with two pack auto paint,

You need to had a load of PLASTCISER to the paint to keep it flexible.

You have a week or so to cut the vinyl and apply before it goes hard and uncuttable.

I sometimes use a medium scotchbrite pad first and before applying any
paint clean the vinyl with either ‘Panel Wipe’ or ‘Meths’

    Hope this helps

O.K. this may sound daft or simple, What about vinyl paint, its made out of the same base chemicals, so does it work?
    Anybody tried it?

do you mean vinyl emulsion pete? 😮 as in dulux or crown!! 😀

I wouldn’t have thought vinyl paint would work. Imagine painting the outside of your house with it, for example. Weathering would fade it in about 3 minutes! Diamond and coal are the same base element, but I wouldn’t expect a coal engagement ring to last long!
You might get it to stick but I don’t think it would look good.

    You mad old sod. 😉

What do airbrushy type people use to paint onto vinyl?

I think Peter is referring to vinyl paint for car interior trim, etc. It is a strong solvent based paint. I tried it many years ago but it was too gloopy and too hard to work with.

I’ve had good results with Dekka Sign Enamel (available from A.S. Handover), which is water based. Strangely, it takes a longer time to dry on vinyl than on orther surfaces, bonds very well though.

The mad old sod just thinks that sometimes the simple answer may work.
Yes the mad old sod means dulux crown etc.
The mad old sod hasnt tried it
the mad old sod may try it
    perhaps it will work fine
    perhaps it wont
You can get it for exterior and batrooms, so it can be durable.
they said man would never fly.
Who would want to paint vinyl any way? 😀
just buy it in the right colour. 😉
    or print on it 😀

Actually, mad old sod, if you needed a pastel or special colour for short term use a sponge roller onto vinyl might be a good idea. You’d have to get the paint nice and thin though or it may not be very good for your plotter.

Or just buy the right colour in the first place. 🙂

    Hi Bigsmoggy

no one has asked why you would want to paint on vinyl or what you were trying to achive ie; change the total colour or create a special effect the answers may be differant if anyone knew what you were trying to do

Lynn ( not the mad old sod)

P s for Andy would you not cut it before you painted it (?)

We use a product 305s Vinyl binders made by Dupont, it can be mixed to any colour (metallics etc.)

Originally used for spraying dashboards, kick panels etc.

Clean down the vinyl with IPA mask and spray. It also works great on banners etc. It is mixed pre-thinned and ready to spray.

The following link has more detail.

I havn’t had any problems after using paint on vinyl with it curling or afecting adhesion in any way.

The only thing to be careful of is removing the appli tape, use a low tack variety and you should have no problemos.

I used some Holts acrylic car spray paint to create a shaded effect on my van graphics four years ago and they still look exactly the same as the day i did them – no lamination and no curling 😀 Just spray from a decent distance and apply in light coats.
Trouble is that you have to live with the standard colour range – but i think now you can get it mixed in spray cans to what ever colour you want.

    Just my thoughts 😉

I haven’t tried this yet, but have read it works well on vinyl. Dr. ph Martins Metal Craft paint is the product. Don’t know where it could be found across the pond, but here’s a link to Dixie Art in the states.

Hi, I use Nazdar 9700 series multi-purpose screenprinting ink. The fumes are tough and dries extra fast.
