We are looking to purchase a new digital camera and wondered if anyone had info on good options. I’m looking for a point and shoot model, which can produce good, clear shots. The intention is to use it for photographing jobs we have done to upload to website and also to take pictures suitable for printing on the Cadet. We are off to America next week so we should get a good deal over there.

I checked the boards and there was a similar thread about a year or so ago, but obviously technology and prices have moved on a lot since then.

    Thanks

    Dawn

Our "work" camera is a Nikon, think its a D200? SLR very good but also bulky. My own camera is getting pretty old by todays standards and is a handy handbag sized point and click Nikon Coolpix.

    Dawn,

Take a look at the Panasonic Lumix range. They do consistently well in comparisons. I’ve recently bought a TZ1 – superceded now, but still a good bit of kit.

My rule of thumb is to look at the lens diameter. Whatever the camera, you can’t take a good piccy if the light can’t get in.

Another thing to note, especially if its a work camera, is to make sure it has a metal body….much sturdier…….especially if dropped from a height! ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ (been there done that!) ๐Ÿ˜€

I have a panasonic fz20, getting old now (the camera not me)

the lense is bigger than most digi cameras, but it has an optical zoom of X12,
    so takes good pics….

But at the end of the day, its a tool,

Andrew uses his as an artist/craftsman.

Taking photos is easy, choosing the subject and composition, and settings,

    could be called an art,

I’ve got a Nikon D70.. fantastic camera 6mp. The D80 gets the best reviews of any camera in its class at the moment 10mp too. I’m buying a D200 at the end of the year though.

If you are not wanting something so bulky, I’ve just bought the wife a Fujifilm 5700 7mp camera. She loves it, and I’m truly impressed with the quality of the photo. Crisp Clear, anti shake technology, small and light weight, but a point and shoot in automatic mode. A real zoom, not digital zoom too, which is what a lot of compacts dont offer.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the suggestions folks – any more are most welcome. If you are recommending a camera which you own, could you post a pic taken with it , to allow me to assess clarity?

    Thanks

another point i forgot to mention dawn…..the digital camera i have is small and when i try and focus on a subject…my arms are out at full length…which i find makes the picture come out blurry….i bought a tripod which did help, but best to go for an slr if you can ๐Ÿ˜‰

A digi camera is only as good as the lens, make sure it has a good make of lens, eg Carl Weiss
I use canon power shot s215
if you get one that uses 4 batteries instead of 2 it lasts longer

My Sony cybershot has a Carl Ziess lens …………. only downside is there’s no ‘anti shake’. But the lithium battery on it last forever before needing recharged! Just charged it for Emily to take to Morocco (she left this evening ๐Ÿ™ ) and that will last 10 days of her snapping away and taking short video clips no problem without needing recharged. It will still have plenty life in it when she gets back. Brilliant.

I have Sony Cybershot too a T30. Mine has something called steadyshot? does yours have that Marcella? surely that is something to do with shaking (?) Excellent Camera anyway, good pics very long battery life, small etc. And good for an idiot to work which for me is useful ๐Ÿ˜Ž

My Cybershot chews up the batteries Marcella….I take it they dont come with Lithium batteries?…I dont have it here to check.

Anything with a Leica lens will be good too, Dawn.

Sticker on mine says the battery is good for 420 pics. More than enough for me ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

My cybershot was about ยฃ220 or so 18 months ago ………… can’t remember the model. But it’s a lithium battery Ian, not your usual rechargeables. I made a point of paying more for a camera with a lithium battery purely because of the battery life. My last 2 digi cameras were Olympus and they chewed batteries every 2 minutes ๐Ÿ˜•
But this one is brill, like Brian has said ………….. Brian, maybe it does have steady shot ……… I’ve never investigated it! ๐Ÿ˜ณ I don’t read manuals either ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ณ But you’re right …….. it’s the shakes! :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

Before packing the camera into Emily’s rucksack, it said it was good for 196 minutes of use. Never looked at how many pics but the guts of 500 or so anyway.

Got a Canon EOS 400…..optics are everything, not just pixels. Battery is fantastic, long life and quick charge time. Also have a small Canon S70. Ideal for shoving in the pocket and all of the accessories are interchangeable.

that was just released when I bought mine Brian……. I bought it March last year ………. not quite 15 months to be exact.

dawn i always thought with the smaller the camera….when you try to take a photo with the (LARGE VIEW FINDER) on them….your arms shaked more (cause they are stretched out more)…rather than using an slr which is a big bodied camera viewed and aimed straight from your eye….. ๐Ÿ˜•

you’d have to post one uncompressed though. JPG degrades with each save, so its better to be an original uncompressed file to get a true picture and measure of clarity.

I have used and tested most of em…. Mostly, I use a P45 – 39 mega pixel back on the hasselblad..

But for a good point and shoot I would highly recommend the Canon range… Without a doubt!

this is the camera i use for work etc… Click Here
its small and is a "point and shoot" giving very good quality pictures.
my model is about 6 months or so old and is an 8 megapixels camera but the one shown above appears to be 10 meg so must be a slightly newer model of the one i have.
the camera does all the usual stuff these type of cameras can but for me its simply to take a good quality picture and it does that well. i also bought a gig memory card with it so i can keep the setting at quality for all my pictures whilst also being able to store loads on it.
