• Buy or bureau?

Posted by cfonsigns on July 29, 2004 at 9:05 am

Been playing for a while with the idea of heading head first into buying a digital printer and at the moment use a bureau who naturally use a all singing and all dancing state of the art machine rather than the 10K ish machines around.

Of course we could improve our profit margin bu buying but is it worth it when you consider the learning curve, downtimes, STRESS, cleaning, training, STRESS, etc etc of buying.

anyone any thoughts, regrets etc on the matter.

Bureau. Save yourself the hassle, heartache, expense and aggravation.

Whatever you buy today will be obsolete next month and then you will be trying to compete against others who have bigger, better, faster more efficient machines than you.

Also, everyone else is getting into digital print but where are the customers coming from? Well, fair enough, there may be a bit of an upturn in the demand but basically all the owners of these shiny new machines are competing for the same customers and as they compete down come the prices. Do you really want to invest a lot of money in a bit of kit that will depreciate like a stone and for which the amount you can charge for the output is declining? Just look at how quickly digital print costs have come down in the last couple of years and make your own decision.

Also with a bureau, if the quality isn’t right you don’t have to spend ages working out why, rectifying it and running the job off again. You just throw it back at the printer. What could be easier?

There was a time to own a digital printer but, in my opinion, that time has long gone. You and I should really be looking for the next bandwagon and jumping onto that before everyone else, making our money and getting out quick whilst we can.

Just let me know when you find out what that is. 🙂
