Probably a silly question, what would happen if two pieces of vinyl were butted together without an overlap and then laminated in one piece. Would the seam come apart as expected through time, or would the laminate hold it in place as it shrinks as well.

it may well work. both materials would have to be of equal quality.. e.g. cast on cast.
i would use a “good” cast if you can as it will have the least amount if any shrinkage. the top coat i would imagine hellp hold the join pretty well..

    why not try this ?

join 2 small peices of cast butt jointed with a laminate of the same material. apply it to the surface in question..

heat it up with a heat gun gently.. then leave an hour.. repeat this three times and leave in a cold room or outside overnight.
have a look at it next day.. πŸ™„

Isn’t the butt question the wife asks:

‘Does my bum look big in this?’ πŸ˜†

Lets have the results of this experiment please
    A very interesting suggestion

Thanks for your thoughts Robert and John.

One reason I’m asking this question is I’m about to purchase a Cadet machine and a 1400mm wide laminator, if a good join can be made in the vinyl and not easily seen, it effectively increases the print size of the Cadet to the laminator width. Would it work on vinyls for printing Robert as this would be the media I was thinking of.

    Cheers

what would be a typical type of application you would use your prints on fred?
e.g. vehicles, foamex for exhibitions, shop fascias etc?

Nothing in particular Robert, I suppose vehicles would be the extreme test.

The reason i ask mate is that every vinyl will react different.
The reason i said cast, is because that will have the least amount of movement/shrinkage etc
When you say vinyls that you will print on. From what i know the cadet will print on many, if not all vinyls. When it comes to butt joining though i would try using a vinyl like a cast or a good calander like mactac or oracal.
Regardless to what you use at the moment you could still do the test.
Just take two bits of vinyl.. Laminate them in the fashion you suggest & go through the motions. See how it performs. πŸ™„
You don’t need to have the laminator you could do it with regular clear on top of a colour.
Just remember lots of vinyls react different from each other. πŸ˜‰
