  • Business rate relief question

Posted by Denise Goodfellow on December 2, 2014 at 9:15 pm

    Hi everyone.

We currently get small business rate relief on our sign shop.

We are buying another shop and plan to open a hairdressers, nb we will be keeping the sign shop.

Will we also get small business rate relief on the new shop while keeping relief on the sign shop?

    Thanks Denise x

    Hi Denise
For a combined rateable value of up to £10k you get 100% relief! For £10,001 to £12,000 you get 50% relief! for £12,001 to £18,000 you get 25% and if the combined value is over £35k you get no relief.

    Hope this helps!

Like Karen says in Scotland it is based on combined rateable value of properties so what you pay if anything will depend on that. How is the sign shop classified for rates at the moment because you may be able to change that if the 2 together pushes you over the limit.
Other thing is don’t rely on the relief to much as it could stop at any time.

I would have thought you would be running it as two separate businesses.

Ie: The Sign Shop Ltd & Denise G T/A A Hairdresser.

Either way the two businesses are unrelated so I would have thought that you would be entitled to business rate relief at both sites.

Are you running the hair dressers, or will you simply be the landlord, in which case the tenant should be liable for the business rates.

    Hi All

Not heard of combined rate relief, is that a Scotland thing?

David, we will be renting out chairs/booths, we will be the landlord, but pay all the bills.

I would think you’re entitled to apply for SBRR for both premises as your sign company isn’t going to be invoicing the people who rent the chairs?

As such it will be run as a separate business.
