it’s that time of the year again when an insurance renewal is due. I was wondering if any of my fellow signmakers had found a company who has good rates?

As a matter of interest in connection with insurance, how many here have had something go so seriously wrong that it’s had to be covered by a big payout from their insurance company?

Hi George, sorry to hear that mate, that would suck big time! Certainly one type of insurance always worth investing in, and also against fire, etc. What about public liability insurance?

never had to call on that yet and dont want to but if you want to work in shopping centres etc some insist you have 10 mill public liability!

Yes that seems to often be the case here too. It’s about $1000/year for 10 Million public liability here but I can’t recall any insurance company ever having payed out anything, let alone 10 million, on behalf a sign business slip-up – not one that I’ve worked for anyway. Might be more popular in the USA though 😉

I had to provide proof of liability insurance just to deliver a damn A-board sign to a condo development!

I also have my garage commercially insured.
Homeowner’s wouldn’t cover it if a client’s car was damaged while I was working on it in there, or if it was destroyed if the garage should burn down.
It can be difficult to get car insurance here from some companies if your vehicle is lettered.

Bill, I’ve just been told that I have to increase my public liability to $20 million if I want to continue working for some of my largest clients.

I do a lot of work in tourism and mining, and both industries have written to me asking for a ‘paid’ receipt proving I have paid for, and increased my $10mil cover to $20mil. I really have to wonder if some contracts are worth it in truth. But then, if I do it to keep one contract, the rest are covered anyway.

I know a few sign boys that do work on the wharfs here, in the marine sector. The condition of them doing work on the hard stands is that they have their insurance documents on them, to be produced on demand. No papers – no work.

There was a sign shop here last year that put up light box signs, and his boys went home before the job was completed. They were going to return in the morning to tidy up and finish the last little bit. Pity they didn’t check the electrical fittings were safe, as the cleaner got electrocuted.

They were fined $45,000’s for the breach of safety, and had their electrical license revoked too I think, and they eventually filed for bankruptcy last week.

Never seen a big payout though, especially as most states here have ‘caps’ to how much compensation you can claim.

Never ceases to amaze me how a drunk, for instance, can dive into a shallow pool and break his neck, and sue the home owner for not having a sign that says ‘no diving in the shallow end’. He won $3mil. I doubt if a sign would have stopped the drunk, but if you’d had a sign, the compensation would have been less.

The real crime though, is that if you are deemed to have caused an accident on a work site, even if you have done everything humanly possible to prevent one, your will never be classed as guiltless. Under new work safe laws here, you must accept a level of guilt. Therefore making insurance vital to your business.

The level of legal representation now in a simple ‘accident’ is crazy. Not half obvious that our politicians are former solicitors eh.

Sorry to hijack the thread. I’ll stop babbling now 😥

A few insurance companies here no longer pay for the signwriting on a car to be replaced after an accident. Especially if it is not registered for business rego, but even then, they often only cover heavy vehicles now.

I’ve had a few jobs be declined by the insurance co in the recent past.

My own vehicle insurance company will not pay for a wrap for instance, just basic computer cut text in one or two colours.

I always get my insurance done through a local broker that I know, they asked me a lot of questions about what I did, where I worked etc.. etc…
to ensure I was covered properly, when I started I think I was covered up to about 5 million but had to up it to 10 million as I was doing quite a bit of work in shopping centres. Like George has said most will insist on a minimum of 10 million and all that I have dealt with insist on seeing the documentation before they will allow you to carry out any work.

Shane, I think there are quite a few insurance companies over here that work the same way and won’t cover graphics being replaced. I’ve done work where the customer had to pay for it themselves.
