  • Built up copper, or copper effect lettering

Posted by David McDonald on November 21, 2006 at 3:05 pm

    Hi All

Have an enquiry for built up letters but to be in copper or copper effect. We have done a few of their resturants in the usual polished stainless steel but they want a different look for their new style of express outlets.

I guess they would require some treatment if proper copper to prevent green oxidisation?

Anyone point me in the right supplier direction??

    Cheers

    Hi Macky

I don’t know about copper letters, but Oracal make a beautiful copper vinyl in their 651 range.

I think that ACCENT do all sorts of stainless built up. In chrome, brushed, gold, and powder coated.

years back I had a customer that wanted ‘new bronze’ coloured ones. In the end it was powder-coated stainless to get somewhere near the colour.

Sure you could get them electroplated in copper – and heavily laquered. But one chip and it’ll go black / green!!

Try some nice metallic paint would be my advice.

Ronan makes a beautiful copper finish paint, in their Aqua Leaf selection.
I have used it with good results for a few years now.
I have also heard of folks going to their local craft store (i.e. Michael’s, JoAnn Fabrics) and buying acrylic metallic-finish paints.
Gemini Letters make plastic moulded letters in a copper finish as well.

None of this may be helpful to you, however, as these are all USA companies!
    Sorry.

    PS
You could always gild the letters with copper leaf (surely available thru Wright’s of Lymm) and have someone clear-coat them with automotive finish.

There is a company here in Ireland that sprays liquid metal finishes (Copper, Bronze, Brass etc) It can be applied to wide range of substrates MDF, Foamex, Mild steel etc. They produce signage and other architectural features. http://www.swirl.ie/

There maybe a UK company that can produce a similar type of finish.

    Found this it may help:

Dave, i never knew accent did built-ups mate. i always thought it was moulded letters they did? they do do copper, chrome etc in mirror finish moulded letters though.

we used a company a while back that did virtually any colour of polished, stamped and special effect stainless steel. i would imagine its just a case of asking for the letters to be created using that. i am pretty positive i have a sample pack in work, ill look it out and give you number tomorrow.

i recon if you call any of the reputable trade built-up companies they will either be able to do it or advise you on who does do them using this copper or the like.
