• BSGA membership

    Morning all!

We have recently been invited to join the BSGA via a ‘sales’ call i suppose you could call it.
Just wondered if anyone on here was a member and felt it was beneficial in any way.
I am aware of certain benefits such as being affiliated with an accredited organization and technical knowledge but i always like to hear from people who have ‘been there and done that.’

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated as usual.

    cheers

    Ryan

I don’t know much about the BSGA, but I would tread warily, as I do with anything of that sort.

There would need to be a lot more tangible benefit to membership than an obscure reference to an "accredited organisation".

Craig Brown – who posts on the boards quite regularly – is the current President of the BSGA so it may be worth while contacting him to ask about the benefits.

I find all these organisations just a way for the bigger companies to ‘network’ themselves, Guild of matercraftsmen, fair trades approved etc etc.

Basically, if you are good at what you do why do you need any trade body? your basically paying for a logo at the bottom of your letter head and then your data to be used to sell you insurance etc etc.

I applied for membership of the BSA (as it was then – later to be called the BSGA) when I first set up in business as a signmaker. My request for membership was turned down as I had not been in business for very long and would have to have been trading for a minimum of two years before being considered for membership.

More recently I have had correspondence from the BSGA advising me of the benefits of becoming a member.

I wrote back saying I had no intention of becoming a member of any organisation that would consider having someone like me as a member 😕

I don’t make a habit of joining organizations such as this due to the fact that we are very busy anyway and if i ever need assistance i generally head this way!
Thought i would ask here as apart from a logo to display i cant see too many benefits to me as a business that has been doing perfectly well without them as it is.

Always good to check in case i was missing something

They have a massive amount of info available regarding all sorts of things from legislation to fixings and installation. If you think it may be beneficial then it’s worth a look. You also get an insurance discount as far as I am aware and that would help justify the cost. Not for everyone but not to be written of as just a logo on a letterhead.

Gavin, all the advice on suppliers, is that not just BGSA members who are suppliers?, could I not get the same info from signlink or sign up date magazine that would include all suppliers instead of just the chosen few

Hi Gordon, I’m not sure about suppliers info, I was meaning general information for reference, there is a heap of it and it can prove very useful.

In you personal experience, would you say that the benefits out way the cost?

That is defiantly up to the individual. For us it has been but with thing tightening we will need to look at it again for future years. You need to find out what kind of information and services they can provide that are valuable to you. The discounted insurance sealed the deal for us to at least sign up for 1 years membership and take it from there
