  • Bonding Hoardboard panels to Steel – advice needed please?

    Posted by Bob Scullion on January 29, 2015 at 9:01 am

    Hi Guys

    Need to do the above, some Hoarding Board directly onto some steel panels but would like to use an adhesive if possible, customer doesnt want screws through the face of the signs, anyone done this or can recommend a particular brand of grab adhesive that has worked?

    Cheers

    Bob

    Cheers Cheryl, thanks for the reply, given the choice I’d like to use something thats not as expensive as the CT1 but if its the only one for the job I might have to.

    Its just that I’ll probably use 8 tubes or so.

    Thanks again

    VHB tape or these;

    but you’ll have to mount the prints afterwards.

    I tried some Evo-Stick Evo-Grip grab adhesive last night and it worked a treat, stuck like the proverbial sh!t to a blanket.

    350ML tube £4.98 from Billy Quicks.

    Thanks guys

    Did a similar job that spanned nearly 20 metres

    We used and always use the following;

    Couple of lines of 1mm thick VHB tape to do the initial hold.

    Hope this help.

    Cheap hoarding panel for a temp job onto steel structure. I would use tech screws.
    Wanting cheap, yet specifying hiding fixings etc doesnt work together in my book. your install time is going to be much longer using a liquid than if you use self tapping tek screws.
    How will it be removed alter? thats going to be difficult and will leave a mess once you have the panels off.

    Doesn’t take that much time, 4 beads of adhesive on each panel, minutes to apply, no screws as per customers request and if and when he wants it removed if it takes longer, which i agree it would, it costs more. I suppose these are the pro’s and con’s or what you might call a compromise.

    I’ve removed this type of panel before and the adhesive actually comes off quite easy if you use new blades in a triumph scraper (6 inch blade)

    Bob, you mentioned "some" hoarding panels.
    If you are trying to align panels, or simply get level, they will move and can slide with liquid fixings unless they have an initial anchor points.
    James mentions VHB tape and that method does work for anchor points. but it will depend on the condition and surface of your steel surface before the tape will adhere. Plus, VHB isnt going to want to stick well to freezing cold steel in the current climate. Due to how cold it is at the moment, i would expect the curing time of the liquid to be much longer.

    Do not get me wrong, if you are happy to use a few dabs of no-nails type fixing then by all means do… there is an array of ways to hide fixings. I am just one for not always allowing the customer to dictate how something like a sign should be fixed and on a budget. because sure as sugar when that phone rings with a problem, he is going to be the one to say "well your the professional" blah blah blah…
