  • BN-20 Ink – When Should I Replace??

for fear of sounding stupid, when should i replace ink carts ?

C,Y,K all showing 20% "or less" as of friday, my first solvent printer and i remember having the fear of death put in me after installation, that all this expensive stuff can go wrong,

what happens if i use the ink till its pretty obvious its totally empty, i remember the fella saying something about it can vacuum it to the machine ??

i dont want to ruin the printer for sake of a few ££ of ink but i dont want to throw it away either.

Appreciate the patience of board members for novices 🙂

The printer will tell you when it can print no more from the cart……there will still be a little ink in the cart at that point.

Not sure about the BN20, but when we had our RS640, it had the option to pause printing when the ink ran out, or continue printing.

We always paused when it ran out, as I believe you can draw air into the ink lines if you run out ink and continue printing.

Good time to order some more though, as you know you’ll run out when you really needed it.

cheers guys, ive more ordered , but u dont wanna throw away upto 20% lol.

i think i may be panicking a little as i was trying to take it all in about not ruining print head etc, proper mainteneance and stuff.

i will double check with roland if the BN-20 has a warning when cartridge is empty, or if anyone on here runs anything, i just knew he mentioned something about drawing air.

    best to be safe 😀

Thanks again for the replies guys.

Been a while since we had a BN-20 but think I went by the Versaworks setting in ‘Edit’ top line menu, drop down to Preferences and tick the ‘Show warning on ink shortage’ box. Even at this point when message came up there was still ink left in the carts.
    Cheers

Wee update! machine stops printing and tells you cart is empty!!

also before you print it will give you a warning that "current ink levels may be insufficient to complete printing – Yellow"

    Clever stuff 😀

Yeah there always is some left in cart sometimes little more than others for some odd reason.

What i have found though is once the warning comes up on the roland interface the rip also comes up with icon saying failed and if you don’t click try again for it to continue just after inserting the ink you will get a area on the print where the data has not been sent to the printer so you get banding. Learned this after ruining lots of good quality media half way through a job. 8(.
