    Hi everyone,

Trying to find a company that sells blank number plates? Have about a dozen each of the yellow and white, and the rolling machine, but no clear film/covering to go over the registration number. Does anyone know of a good supplier?

    Thanks for your help,

    Emma

Gould Autoplates in Bristol are good but you’ll need a DVLA Supplier Registration number to be able to buy them.

If you are registered then no problem.

No we’re not registered 😮 didn’t know you had to be? We’re wondering what the official number plate font is also.

Thanks Neil 🙂 So, is it a must to be registered then? Even for supplying show plates etc It’s not something we’re going into on a big scale, but have been asked for a couple of showy ones. Any ideas for companies that sell to unregistered people? I feel like that’s a really dodgy question to ask now ha ha :lol1:

    Hi Chris,

I really had no idea, honestly thought that people can just make their own up so long as they conform to legal fonts/sizes/colours etc Obvioulsy alot more to it than that!

The law now does not exclude show plates.
if you use the registration number on a piece of plastic, its considered a numberplate.

    big fines for mis use,

if you start making plates, as Chris says, do it right or not at all.

The fact is if a legit plate maker hears you are doing "show plates" he may well report you,
we have never made them, simply because there is not a lot of profit, unless you are doing lots a day.

most larger car repair shops do their own nowadays anyway

    Hi Peter,

Thanks very much for that information, really had no idea, as you say not worth the risk and we don’t want to be doing anything illegal! We’d just been asked to do a couple for show as in truck drivers for in their cab windows- you know elvis and the likes lol I’m guessing this is a bit different when they are not being used as official registration plates as such- or isn’t it?!

they pay around £2.50 for them i some places have known them to be free with a pair of real plates all for under £6.

i have done them on a bit of foamex as part of a lettering job.

Why not just make ‘Elvis’ etc. tags out of foamex, you could probably make use of offcuts. This way it’s hardly going to cost you any.

It is actually illegal according to my last letter from the dvla to supply show plates and if caught supplying non standard plates and not keeping proper records you could be paying £5000 fines.

Not worth it for an £8 plate 😕

PHILL, I just sneezed, hope the law doesn’t come calling, or is it swine flue 🙄

I had an enquiry recently to make up a set of personalised number plates for a pedal car which was to be a surprise 5th birthday present for a little boy…..

…..I had to refuse to do the job as they couldn’t provide me with the required registration documents :worry:

Emma you can make number plates with names on like Elvis as long as it is not a registration number for example ELV 1S. Just use a different font.
But check all combinations and if it could be a registration number then tell the customer it can’t be made.

    Martin,

We discussed this with the DVLA directly and they told us that things such as ELV 1S (ELVIS), P4 ULH (PAUL H) etc couldnt be made up either as they are or can in the future be used as Vehicle Registration Numbers that could be on the road.

If you wanted ELVIS or PAUL H or CAPRI, ESCORT etc then you could because these were not VRNs. There are rumours of new tamperproof plates being introduced to new cars very soon too and only dealers will be able to fit them.

We have also found that there is no money in Numberplates, we are DVLA registered and the hassle just isnt worth it.

Thanks everyone, think we will just leave this one for now and just make the ‘non registration’ ones if they come up. Really appreciate all your advice and information 🙂
