  • Blade catching vinyl when first making contact

    Posted by Daniel Owen on July 14, 2011 at 8:51 pm

    I am using a Redsail 1360 plotter, and WinPCSign Letter 2005.

    Recently when I cut something, when the blade first goes down into the vinyl it makes a what can only be described as a "NICK", rather than just the blade setting into the vinyl and cutting directly.

    I havn’t got a clue why it is doing it, But I can’t cut anything atm because it is leaving nasty edges to my finished product. And if I cut anything below 10mm, i.e. small lettering it is just making a mess of it.

    I have set the blade offset, curve resolution, & weeding value to what it says in the manual.

    I have tried 30, 45, & 60 degree blades in, and the lower the offset the worse the "NICK" gets.

    Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong and how I can rectify it, thanks.

    Maybe you have too much blade coming out of holder?

    Is it as simple as not tightening the holder as much then

    I’ve just tried it with different lenghts of blade poking out of the holder and it is still doing the same

    don’t know that plotter but the graphtec stabs the vinyl just before the cut is to start to orientate the blade correctly.

    if the pressure is to high and the blade does not rotate freely then it makes a big rip.

    to ensure the blade is rotating freely remove the blade from the holder and blast wd40 at the bearings in the blade holder to flush them out dry out and replace.

    Hi Daniel,

    I’m not familiar with your plotter, but it sounds like few issues might be affecting you:
    Blunt or broken tip of the blade- this can happen when vinyl catches it, or if you handle the holder carelessly;
    too much down force;
    or
    damaged bearings in the holder- there was a post on here about it- you almost cannot see anything looking into the holder, but the bearings are there and they might be gone damaged;
    and the last one- cutting strip is damaged/worn due to too high cutting pressure previously…
    I hope you’ll manage to sort it out- let us know.

    There is a great write up on the blades.uk.com site explaining everything in more detail.

    Thanks Robert.

    It appears there is alot of resistance when putting a blade in the holder so I have ordered a new holder to see of thats the problem.

    And also the cutting strip is damaged, where do I buy a new strip from at 1360mm long

    Look what I found as the first item on Google 🙂 looking for redsail cutting strip:
    http://www.premiersign.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=CuttingStrip

    (you will need to order more than 1 metre)

    It should be a straight forward pull off- clean- replace job
    Good luck!

    No worries- I benefited from it as well, as it look like this strip could fit my Graphtec as well!

    Actually, a favour: please let us know how wide is this strip once it arrives, as at this price it is worth a shot!

    Received the new cutting strip today.

    Really displeased with it. It was not the same width all the way through.

    And there was no double sided tape supplied with it.

    But i’ve fitted it and now the blade no longer catches the vinyl.

    If you require a new cutting strip for your graphtec then you can use the following as I’ve been using it for a while now with no problems and a fraction of the cost of buying a genuine one.

    I’ve just bought some off ebay from china, hopefully it will be right.

    The one I had bought previously never came with the adhesive backing, so had to try and cut double sided tape down to size which was a pain in the backside. And now it is lifting up, and also one of the strips they sent was all shapes and sizes. But the company I bought it off won’t reply to my emails, and have no phone number at all.

    My plotter originally came with a type of strong plastic tape (sellotape) covering the whole cutting strip to hold it in place as well as having the double sided tape. Just a thought for you to stop it coming out.. When i replaced it I have not fitted the over tape and it’s been fine..

    Mine had that tape over it aswell. Will have to put some tape over it as a temporary measure
