Well, theres only so many socks you can get for your Birthday before you think "Enough is enough" so to celebrate my 32nd I went off and bought myself a very cheap Jaguar XK8 that only needs minor work.

Only downside is that I now have to sell a car in order to fit them all in my garage. I wish I had a normal addiction like Beer or Drugs!!

    Pics tomorrow.

Always had a soft spot for the XK8.

Classic sporty lines, V8 burble and doesn’t scream ‘mid life crisis’. 😛

Good thing is – despite the recent downturn in (large engined) used car values it holds it’s resale value very well…unlike my XJ8 :lol1:

    Dave

    ps. So….colour, model…

OOooooohhhhh low blow Mr Normington lol

Couldnt knock it back for £2300, parts only cost me £150 and the resale should at least be double (not that its for sale).

Im told it will return 26mpg but I think thats going downhill with the engine off and a tail wind.

David, the colour is black which im told is rare and im not sure of the model tbh (other than its a 4 litre V8 with cream leather). We got it back to the yard today, reset the inertia switch and it fired first time off a booster pack.

It looks sorry for itself at the minute but I can see the hidden beauty.

Could be worse…a new one would be a TATA!

…26mpg…perhaps (if you go easy with the loud pedal) as a combined average.

    Don’t expect much better than 16 or 17 round town…no…seriously. 😳

Well, from tomorrow, I need another car.

I was surprised to find that the Hummer H3 does 24 mpg. Which is one more than my wife’s Discovery does.

    What’s a mid-life crisis? 😛

    Nice car Paul.

Did I understand you right – it only cost £2300 😮

Am I thinking of the right car – you better post some pictures!

I nearly had a mid life crisis myself today – I was working on site today and there was a Chrysler 300C in the workshop I was in. I mentioned to the owner that I loved his car…. and he tried to sell me it there and then.

"I’ll sell it to you at a really good price" he said – I quickly withdrew because I knew I was weak and willing and Alison would’ve thrown me out of the house if I had succumbed and bought it 😕

    Happy Birthday!
Where I used to live, my neighbor had a really old Jag in his garage. It was wearing a thick coat of dust. He only worked on it every few years.
    I never saw it outside.
But it was hi pride and joy!
    Love….Jill

Yes my precious, we did have two, xj12 (that was blue) and a (technically speaking not a jag) a Daimler sovereign xj6(the brown one) Wish I had kept the number plate from the Daimler though…250 MPH. never thought cars would ever go twice as fast as the Daimler

John, the 911 is out of the bodyshop and im rebuilding that over the next week or so.

Phill, yes £2300 its got an insurance claim againstit but when you see the damage you wont believe it (just a light and bumper, nothing structural).

    Its one of these:-

One thing about Jaguar is, with the occasional aberration like the XJS, Jaguar have always made very pretty cars.

They stand the test of time too. In the looks stakes the 1969 XJ6 could still hold it’s own 25 years later. And who could deny the appeal of the 1959 E Type?

I like Jags. I had an XJ6 many many years ago. Silver with black leather interior, it was lovely! 😀
The XK8 is stunning ……. can’t believe you got one at that price!!!!!! 😮

Pics as promised, please bear in mind it has stood in a salvage yard for a year with the window down but I have great faith that this will be a stunning machine in under 4 weeks.

what can you service the cars for (money wise)??

i recall my ex boss having one and spending around £6k on a full service (two tyres, pads, disks and the usual oil n filters), still, that was cheaper than the near £10k for the first major service on his new bentley!

nice car, always liked the older XJS V12’s but never owned one, generally any big coupe gets my vote, had plenty from capris right through to plymouth cuda’s, wouldn’t entertain a ferrari though… hairdressers cars!

Its done mate, failed its MOT though as the useless MOT station snapped the handbrake cable and then failed it on that fact. It looks like they havent realised it was a fly off handbrake and just pulled and pulled till it snapped. Getting retested tomorrow then just needs a VIC check, ill have it at the NEC this year.

Ive also been asked to do a piece in the XK owners club magazine about it.

Ill get some finished pics up tomorrow when its back from the MOT station.

Servicing shouldnt be more than the £600 mark from a main dealer, ill be doing it myself though, at the end of the day, its only a Ford.

The cars washed and finished and is now my daily driver. As for my comment about it "only being a Ford" it became a little more obvious yesterday when I changed a tail light bulb and saw the ford stamps on the bulbholders.

It’s annoying cos it seems a sacrilage to suggest even a teensy weeny pinstripe or small class emblem to make it even better…..
