  • Best method/locators for mounting narrow standoff flat cuts

    Hi everyone.

I need to mount a narrow script font on a curved tray, font width between 9mm and 20mm. I’m trying to work out a way of standing the script off the surface but I think conventional locators will be visible !
What are the narrowest / smallest locators available off the shelf so to speak. . either plastic, brass or other. .. or am I going to have to fabricate and weld my own ?

any advice would be greatly appreciated !

Dave, I think the narrowest fixing for cut out letters would be M4 metal studs

not sure but I think these are originally from the car body repair trade and I’ve seen the stud welding guns for sale in the Machine Mart book if this helps

otherwise, it would be small brass locator’s available from FK Moore near Broadstairs, Kent I think 🙄

I’ve used ‘Bighead fasteners’ with small characters, although you may have to trim the base to size but they offer several different types.
I last used an M4 nut style glued to the letter, then cut lengths of M4 studding and shorter lengths of clear acrylic tube. Drill the wall, fill the hole with glue, slide the tube over the studding and push into the glue filled hole – job done.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. . .really appreciate it. Just to update you the customer has changed their mind last minute and wants 19mm machined Foamex which gets me off the hook !
However I think I’m going to spend an hour or so experimenting with some of your suggestions for future use. . ..

    Thanks again 🙂

Hi Dave not sure if you had a look at one of my jobs but I made 200 10mm clear acrylic rods to use as stand off fitting, the acrylic has to be cut very very square,

i just read the full thread and thought, i know what ill reply with and then pops up mr Urquhart post! can expand on rich’s suggestion as i have used it a few times in the past. i also use the clear rod somtimes for builtps with led illumination amd im trying to hide shadowing from the locators and locator bridges on deep return metal letters.

the threaded pin head, probably get from bighead as been posted is also a good solution as you just dril and slide on and adhere with a two part adhesive in the holes or nuts on the rear. hope that made sense? 😕
