  • Best media/laminate system for large van graphics?

Posted by John Dorling on September 16, 2008 at 7:54 am

    Hi All

I’m about to do my first printed job on a LWB Transit. I have done a design which incorporates a printed panel that runs along the bottom of the van from front to back between the axles about 12" high. The same graphic, slightly smaller, is on the back doors and the bonnet. There are also a couple of large graphics that will go on the rear panels and will have to go over some panel reccesses. I use a VersaCamm with ecosolmax inks.

What would be the best print media and laminate to go for on this type of job? Also, is conformable app. tape neccessary?

    Thanks in advance

    John

I’m just doing a transit swb at the moment. Its a full wrap including the roof and is being removed in 6 weeks so I went with 1005EZ RS.

Which recesses are you going to be going into? The side recessed panels? If you can lay the vinyl in then you can go with any polymeric that takes your fancy.

If you want to stretch I’d go with a cast material even like the 6000X.

You shouldn’t need any app tape either if the prints are laminated. Its rigid enough.

John I dont think there is such a thing as conformable app tape?
There is a tape called conform but it dosnt. it refers to its ability to stay on the backing paper. perhaps I am mistaken and someone will enlighten me.

I would only use app tape on print if it was contour cut

Peter there is a conformable app tape. You can heat it etc and it stretches with the vinyl. Let me see if I can find it.

I think R Tape Digi mask is the one. Trying to find the video again.

    Found the link: http://www.rtape.com/digital_printing/d … clear.html

    I haven’t used it yet.

Here is the design so you can see what size the graphics are and where they will have to go. The mower and the chainsaw will be contour cut.

You might want a cast material. That grass along the bottom there is an indentation that requires a bit of heat and stretching to get the material in that area. You could try and lay the material in but you’ll need to patch up where the material goes over the wheel arches. I will put up pics tonight of the wrap were finishing off today.

    Cheers

I have taken your advice Jason and ordered some cast wrapping film and laminate. I may have over-designed this job to my skill level though as I haven’t done any large areas of print onto vehicles before. I have got the job booked in now so there’s no turning back!

Anybody have any tips for the application of these prints?

    Thanks

The ones on the side I would just app tape and apply. I would lay the graphics into the recesses so you might want to account this in the design. You will be loosing about 10mm from the recesses.

The grass at the bottom I’d be wary of the groove at the bottom.

I’ve added a pic of a wrap I finished today where I highlighted the groove I’m talking about.

Jason that van looks awesome – love the design.

I may adjust the design so that the grass just comes into the bottom of that recess, instead of trying to cross it. I’ll get my media through tomorrow so I can have a play. I’m doing the van next week.

No problem John. If you need anything just post a question here.

I’ll post the van in the portfolio section tomorrow after I put the companies logo on it.
