  • best invisible fixing for 5mm foamex interior signs?

Posted by Myles Brewer on June 2, 2009 at 9:08 pm

    Hi,
Could anyone suggest the best way to fix 5mm foamex signs to interior emulsion painted walls?, they will be approx 1400x800mm (so not too heavy)

they will need to be up for between 3 & 12 months & will then be removed.

Needs to leave as little damage to walls as poss, but at the same time be secure as there will be a large volume of passing people incl kids.

And must not be visible from the front.

thinking some sort of VHB tape at the moment although I’m sure that will make a good mess of the wall when removed.

    Thanks
    Myles

you can bond them with something like Sticks like Sh*t which will damage the wall finish when removed or face fix and either bond screw caps in place or use the snap shut screw caps. Bonding will only be as good as the paint bond though, so screwing sounds the better idea unless you want to make a hook over system for the rear of it.

This may sound complicated, but is really quite simple, and has been used in woodwork for many years to hide fixings.

Using a 10mm wide sharp chisel, shave a strip from the surface of the foamex in one direction, so it curls up, Drill or insert your cs screw under the curl, then a blob of glue to stick the curl down.

OK you will have a few small holes to repair when the sign is removed,
but better than having to repair large areas that could pull off if using adhesives

Thanks Kev, but unfortunately the customer is adamant, no face fixings to be visible

Thanks Peter, A sneaky trick indeed 😀 Would that work on 5mm foamex or would it be a bit thin? I think I still prefer the sound of the poppits

problem with the poppets you won’t get a flush fit to the wall so if people are constantly walking past it they may end up catching it and un-popping it. Really depends on the location as to if they will work. Could also allow the board to distort due to not being flat against the wall

hhmmm, I noticed the small poppits only protrude by 8mm which if countersunk into the foamex by about 2 mm would bring it into to 6mm… not too bad. The distortion may be more of a problem though, your right 🙁

Maybe it’s back to the VHB or peters hidden screw fixing idea..

    Hi Myles

    What about a ‘split-batten’?

Strips of 5mm foam board with a 30degree angle cut. Cut to width of board less 50mm each side. Fix one length to the wall with panel pins and the other side is stuck to the back of the sign. One length near the top of the sign and a ‘spacing piece of 5mm foam board to the bottom.

Just make sure that all is level and all should be OK. Only panel pin holes to fix after removal…

Hope this makes sense – hard to explain so drawing on forum marked Split Batten Idea.

    Regards
