  • Best double sided tape for pole pockets

    Hi all,

Can anyone point me in the direction of a high strength
double sided tape for PVC banner pole pockets?

I recently made up a banner for a scaffolding company
and used 25mm wide 0.3mm thick double sided tape to stick the pole pockets.

After 1 day the customer has informed me that the tape is starting to fail.

Am I using the wrong kind of tape?

    If it’s obvious be gentle!

Thanks in advance for any info.

Dan, I wouldn’t use DS tape for pole pockets, just wouldn’t trust it myself especially on a scaffold banner that is going out doors and possibly quite high where wind loading will be greater.
Sure someone will tell you they do it without any problems but my opinion would be to get them stitched or welded everytime.

    Thanks Martin,

I’ve been chatting with a few of the self adhesive tape
suppliers and they are sending me some samples to try
    out.

Maybe a banner welder would be a good investment as I’ve
never been that good with a sewing machine!

Would rather not pay someone else to do it.

Dan, I haven’t been asked for one for some time now but the ones I have done were all done by someone else, don’t have the equipment to do them myself either.
How you clean the banner material and apply the tape is going to make a big difference as well. Maybe even try a wider tape, next size up for banner tapes is about 38mm I believe.

    Hi Martin,

The suppliers are sending me some primer as well to prep the
surface for the tape, I’ll be interested to see how that works plus
a thicker size might not be a bad idea.

    Thanks

Just use ordinary banner hemming tape but put an eyelet through the hem
at each corner. Heat the join with a hot air gun to make sure its stuck.

    Thanks Martin O

I’ve done exactly that after the same suggestion from a supplier.

PVC banner pole pockets should be ideally sewn with twin seams for max strength.

Dan- How did you do these, I’ve got 2 banners I need to add pockets to, and would rather do it in house to make sure they’re right.

we borrowed a banner welder, the one that walks along the table… we found the quality of weld and neatness to be the issue to do it time and time again

We use tape from Robert Horne

I tried our hemming tape. I wasn’t convinced so made a mock up.

We fed the poles through the sleeves and lots off pulling, twisting, yanking, it didn’t budge. The customer is great, so I explained we tried it, it should be fine…. Any problems I’ll get it welded.

He was so happy he"s ordered another two!
