Well I’m normally a crusty old cynic (not helped by the antics of GW) but I can’t help feeling this is a red letter day….I’ll be sitting the boys and myself down to watch this bit of history.
I hope that the hope he engenders will materialise. Like it or not, it is important for us all that it does. Well done America! 😀 -

Unfortunately I think you may be right John.
I don’t think he’d be very welcome is some parts of the USA.
The common thought here is that he may go the same way as his hero Mr King 😮 JFK and King were both Charismatic too…..and both were not universally loved by the Americans.
Looking at all the hype, its got the feeling that he’s the new Savior, but if what he has promised doesn’t eventuate, his life will not be worth squat.
Very charismatic though. I see the security for the man is unprecedented in presidential history, so that tells me that the powers that be are taking the assassination threats seriously.
I hope it never happens of course, but if it does, it will give a new meaning to the term martyr.
Then watch the trouble start after that 😮

When I was in Texas I visited the G.W. Bush Snr Library in College Station, they had the Cadillac that he used while in office. An amazing vehicle, the glass alone was 4-5 inches thick. Assassination is an ever present threat to any US president…..I honestly think, that with the exception of a minority of bigots and hardliners, that his race is not all that important to the majority, that is why it is an historic day.

I didn’t vote for Obama, but I have nothing against him.
Sort of wish he’d have chosen Hilary as his VP, she has enough b@lls for two men.

I am already sooo sick of the hype, there has been nothing else on TV for three days. While I am a proud American and I love the pageantry of the inauguration (closest thing we have to royalty really) I am tired of the way he is being made out to be the new Saviour.
I agree wholly with Shane’s statements.
Seems to me Obama is wanting to ride the coat tails of MLK and Abraham Lincoln. We’ll see how he does.
I did vote for GW, twice, the first time because I liked him and the second time because I didn’t like his opponent. I respect the office of the Presidency, but no longer care for GW. I do like his wife, Laura.
I will watch the ceremony on TV today as I have all the others in my life.
I liked Jimmy Carter’s, when he walked down Pennsylvania Avenue rather than taking the limo.
If you’ve ever been to DC, it is a grand clean city with beautiful buildings and monuments. I did the White House tour at Christmas time in ’00, what a lovely historic home.

I agree there is so much expected from the man it’s almost unfair to put so much hope and expectation on one individual. However, I like him a lot and hope he does well.
But what gets me is how come Bonio and his band U2 manage to weasel in on every high profile event in the world 😕

Someone told me this morning that 5,000 port-o-potties have been set up.
That sounds like a lot until you hear that there will be more than a million people in DC. It averages out to 450 people per potty. (or something like that) At least it is 30° there today, better than it being high summer.

I hope he makes a difference but I do think people are reading way to much into the African American thing. A man on Radio 2 today had a good point about it possibly sticking in the throats of people from certain racial (or racist) beliefs in USA and that he will potentially be the hardest President to protect from extremists.

I am overjoyed and extremely proud to have Barack Obama as our new president. This is a profoundly joyous day and a marked one in our history. Change has already come in a very big way to America.
I worked very hard to help get him elected; I worked hard in 2000 and 2004 to prevent Bush, too, and all I can say is I’m glad that long national nightmare is over. I feel like I can go out of the country again without feeling embarrassed and trying to pass as a Canadian.
As far as being concerned about Obama; all I can say is that he was elected by a greater majority than any recent President, he currently has somewhere between a 75 and 83 % approval rating, which obviously includes people who did not vote for him, but who nevertheless are impressed by the way he’s handling his transition. Yes, there are people who don’t like him, that will always be the case. About 75% of the country has been sick and tired of Bush for at least 2 years, and about 50% have feared and despised him ever since 2000, not to mention the rest of the world, (that shoe throwing guy is very popular here, and has spawned loads of imitators, most recently right outside the White House) and he finally got his sorry butt safely on that helicopter and out of town today without incident, so we don’t need to harbor fears for Obama. He has probably the best security force in the world, and he has a tremendous amount of goodwill and optimism with him. We’re facing incredible challenges, and people just want someone who’s smart enough and creative enough to just start making a dent in them, and the vast majority want him to succeed – we desperately need it. Cheers, world. -
Can’t help but think he is, in the basic sense, still a politician. Of course political survival is at the top of their list.
Ms Clinton made some pretty nasty comments and predictions about the man, and he said some equally nasty things about her.
Now, she is Secretary of State, and working for the same guy she said had no experience or idea..
So who was lying? Was there any truth in either statement about the other?
Sorry, a politician is a politician 1st and foremost.
Be an interesting ride though. Lets not forget too, that the financial mess the US is in has been universally attributed to Mr B Clinton, Obama’s own colleague in politics. So in a sense, its ironic that he’s been elected to fix the mess.
That said, he seems a nice guy, who is clearly a family man. His two daughters are too young to give him political grief too, like Mr Bush’s daughters tended too :lol1:

I wouldn’t be too concerned about his safety, almost every sane person on the planet has wanted rid of GWB but nobody killed him, Obama is pretty safe i’d guess.
The biggest thing for me with all this is HOW THE HELL DID BUSH GET IN?
