    Hi Guys

We have just bought an eyeletting machine and are making our own banners.

Does anyone know a good method for hemming without a sewing machine?
I have seen this banner tape advertised, wondered if anyone had any good advice on this. It seems that it could be difficult to turn the edge of the material.

I can’t seem to get into that link though, telling me that it’s for members only. My membership is up to date I think, or am I being thick.
    It’s been known!!!

    No worries mate.
Can’t afford the upgrade right now.
Perhaps someone can just give me a quick tip on the edging bit.

Tim I have just started selling banners with no hemming, but I put a second piece of banner material behind the grommet to add extra strength, It seems to be ok, had a few up for a while now.

If it’s short term no hem is really needed. Longer term we use tape. Apply the tape to the edge and (1edge at a time) and fold over. Takes a wee bit of practice but remember it’s a banner and doesn’t need to be perfect so even your first attempts should be fine.

I have also made printed banners without hems, without any problems, but if it was for long term use and in a place subject to wind, and without any backing(wall or fence) then I would hem for that extra bit of strength.

Hexis sell double sided tape for banners, although I have some I have not tried it yet. 25mm and 50mm

Some people have had a problem with the material curling if not hemmed, I have only used the heavyweight digital banner from trounce for printed banners, no problems.

Should have said, we use the 3m 25mm banner weld – it’s been thoroughly tested!

The only problem using hem tape is that if you roll the banner up it wrinkles quite badly and looks unprofessional.

I don’t see it as that much of a problem. Our banners we buy in are not exactly perfect on the edges and then you have the white stitching. It’s a bit of a compromise maybe, but the profit margin is much better! And we have never had any complaints. Let’s you turn banners around very quickly as well.

We’ve done several lately with Power tape on printed banners.
Its a flexible plastic strip that sticks to the back of the banner and you eyelet right through. It gives a stiff rigid edge to the banner and helps keep it straight. The only down side is its a bit too rigid.

Thanks everyone for your kind help.
I think that it’s experiment time!

    Cheers
