  • Banner Vinyl-How many of us use it?

Posted by John Singh on September 17, 2003 at 12:37 am

Reflecting on one recent post about banners raises the question in my mind as to how many of us actually use banner vinyl when doing banners.

In my situation I simply do not have space to stock a multitude of banner vinyl colours. So for me it would be a case of ordering as per job order.

    So,
    (1) What are the advantages of banner vinyl over ordinary?
    (2) And how many of us actually use it?

I’ve never even thought about using anything else. When I had my first banner job, I went to my supplier, bought the banner and I asked what to use. They said Banner vinyl, and I’ve never used anything else for it.

They’re bloody helpful at my suppliers. Staffed by tradespeople, with loads of experience. I can’t speak highly enough of them.

John, Banner vinyl is very sticky, and seems to be a lot more flexible than normal vinyls. It doesn’t seem to have as much gloss as usual vinyl.

Do you have a supplier close to you? I ask this because mune are only 20 minutes away, and sell all of their vinyls off the roll. Maintaining a large stock isn’t a problem. I just buy odd stuff for individual jobs.

For banners I use “Banner” grade vinyl.

Although I believe there is a vinyl that suitable for both.( That what the sales literature says)

I tell the customer that I use the proper material, and they should be aware of others that don`t. This usally works.

Banner vinyl is much more flexible & forgiving than normal vinyl.

If you need to apply wet it grips the banner much quicker than other vinyls. (less time squegeeing).

Its flexibility allows the vinyl to ‘flow’ with the movement of the banner on site & will not crease or crack over time.

Banner vinyl every time for me. 😀

For me it depends on what banners you use, I buy mine from banner box.

The economy grade banners are great and you can use normal vinyl (oracal 751 in my case)

But for longer life you need the premier banners in which case you really need to use Banner vinyl (again oracal – those UKSG discounts are great!)

The premier banners seem to react with the 751 vinyl, although i don’t know why beacuse the adhesive on the tech sheets seems to be the same.
But what happens is after a while 751 on a premier banner becomes really tacky and shrinks and shrivels up.

I agree with john its takes up alot of space to store banner vinyl as well, so i tend to buy it in when i need it rather than have stocks.

My advice, try it out test a banner from your suppliers stick various vinyls to it and see which looks best after 6 months

    John,

You don’t need to keep large amounts of stock. We tend to have mainly black and one or two other colurs. We tag our orders together as and when it’s needed.
It has already been mentioned that it adheres better and remains looking better for longer.
We also tell the customers that to ensure it looks nice it should be rolled with the text on the outside otherwise it will wrinkle severely.

An example of how quick it is to use is, we recently laid up 2 x 4m x 610cm and a 3m x 610cm, all choc a bloc with text(one colour) in under an hour!
And they were all done wet.
I dare say those that lay up dry would say this was slow.

We use Oracal 651 on all our banners no problems as yet I even did a 40ft curtain sider for floors to go in black all in 651 its been on for about two years now and its still looking good , the total lenghth of the lettering was 30ft long x 21inch high I will post a pic of it soon.

Did you really use Oracal 651 on a curtain sider? Wow! That scare’s the be-jesus out of me, if that went pear shaped then it could of been costly and embarrasing. Do Oracal gaurantee this type of application??

I use a fair bit of Tekton for cheapie Banners and you can use anything on them as there is no plasticiser migration, the problem that causes traditional vinyl to react with some pvc banners. Having said that Banner Vinyl is so much easier to apply, is much more forgiving should it crease and if push comes to shove you can use banner vinyl on other things, although it does have a silk/matt finish.

I bought a whole bundle of cheap roll ends, different widths of Banner vinyl from my supplier which has come in very useful for detailing plain black on white!

That’s an interesting stat on ‘reacts to the outgassing of chemicals from the curtains’. Does that mean there could be a problem if the lorry is older? We have really only done new and newish ones.
Sometimes do have a problem with Signflex when its gets a bit cold in the winter and can’t get them indoors.

    Cheers

this amazed me! i simply do not know why it has stayed on…

i would not suggest using a banner grade vinyl for a curtain sider never mind
    a 4 year life calander vinyl.. 😕

    all i can say is..

banner vinyl for banners, truck vinyl for trucks… lets me sleep at night 😉

    Hi All,
The curtain sider we did using oracal 651 has had a hard life since we finished the job its in and out of a huge timber mill every day the curtains are opened and shut a few times a day and yet its still there good as new. When we did the job I made a mistake with one of the lines of text,I left it until the next morning to replace as it was late I had a hell of a job getting it off, infact it took the face of the curtain with it,I know it may not be the correct material but if it works that well leave well alone I say.

well we will have to agree to disagree.. 😆 😆
i hear what you are saying.. you use it on banners, curtain sider trucks etc and it sticks very well never any probs.. personaly i dont understand why it has not shrunk, cracked, wrinkled, peeled or flaked.. sticking is only one thing you need to acheive. cracks, flaking etc are also issues.
i know you say it is perfect.. well fair enough. if it works for you, then why? change. your right..
if this was the case all over the world, i dont see why we have to have a banner vinyl range.
just like a vehicle wrap range if cast does the job equaly as good.
banner vinyl is very soft and stays that way..
its a totaly different type of vinyl to a 4 year life calander.
calander vinyl becomes brittle over a short time of weather/tempreture changes. this alone should instigate cracking! it is sticking to a flexible surface that is constantly being folded/rolled yet the vinyl, although brittle by now, has to remain intact? this confuses me, not saying your wrong, just simply have not seen it for myself) & never has it worked for myself over the past 14 years.. and beleive me i have tried.. 🙄
not even truck vinyls are 100% in some cases i have reverted back to ink because ive had so much bother…

Well guess I’ll just have to order some banner vinyl!
Take your point everyone, especially Gray and Keith.
Not necessary to stocks loads of different colours just the primary ones

Now what about these banners inks? Has this subject been discussed in any forum. I must check 😀
