well as some may know by now i now have my new solvent print & cut machine.
we had the training for it on friday afternoon so have only just been playing with the settings & trying to become familure with it all..
andrew (vectorwise) & i, that is.
today, was the first day we started to actualy print work that had back-logged before we got our hands on it. from around midday, andrew had it working flat out without any glitches.. thank god.. sooo.. around 5.30pm we decided to run our largest single print… shown below.

the rip took only 3 mins to send the message to the machine and the print took only 12 mins to print.. colours and print quality were amazing, this was onto “banner material”

That is outstanding quality Rob 🙂

Is it true that the machine is only 2 foot off the ground? :lol1: :lol1:

We just beat you Rob we bought a Roalnd SC540EX about four weeks ago(I am pretty sure this is the same machine as yours but different brand)

We had a few problems with profiles as we did not use Roland inks but inks from Ink Technologies supplied via Vinyl Logistics (they did the setup as well, free and their inks are half the price of Roland at £70 per 500ml). We are now getting beautiful prints on all media but had to experiment with the cheaper media quite a bit (found that the worked best at high resolution). On expensive vinyl you have to wait at least 24 hours before using the vinyl or cutting as the vinyl takes time to cure.

WE are having serious problems with lots of print and cuts and would be interested in your input (we are finding that it is not accurate enough for multiple cuts over a couple of metres.

I would also be interested in finding out what vinyls you are using for what jobs (I woulds still like to join the UK Sign group but it is now over four weeks and I still cannot join)

    Regards Adrian

    to answer some questions…
nik.. havent a clue. 😮 seriously, maybe andrew could help you better on that. was a while back when i ordered it. i basicaly asked what spec the machine should be from the folk we buy the machine from, then spoke to the guy that builds our comps and asked him to make it a fair bit more than the spec as to give ample power if needed..

as for media, only been running it on banner material and metamark md5, i think i will be giving it a go on grafityps vehicle wrap vinyl next week to see how i get on with that, grafityp will give you the profile for their vinyl (not sell, as i said in a back post :-?)
there is various profiles already loaded with the rip but all cator for the supplier of the machines media only. having said that i have sent samples of oracal 751 to be profiled so i awaite on that.. hopefuly very soon now.

i also know that some oracal print vinyl has been profiled also, these can be obtained at glasgow europoint display, best ask cameron steer.

like i said, we only just got the machine friday so i hope i can give you a bit more help in weeks to come.
the roland you speak of, i know the grenadier is a rebadged/modified roland soljet 2. but uses true solvent inks rather than eco-solvent.
does your supplier do true solvent inks for same machine?

regardng UKSG memberships, these will reopen next sunday. i hoped for sooner but i have been upto my eyes in work on and off the site mate. sorry. ill make the announcment on home page asap.

with regards to the machine being only 2 foot and 2 feet long prints..
well i am utterlly gutted, you both know fine well i stand 6’2″ in my socks.
why oh why must you keep making fu of me because im so tall and lanky.

    ahem…

    😉

Adrian , there are a lot of factors that will affect how accurate the cut is. The vinyl drifts and shrinks with the heater , the machine is only warranted to have x% accuracy over distance , thing is multiple cuts are HUGE distances of travel , especially if the machine jumps around in the cutting.
    Some strategies are
    1) split the step and repeat cuts into smaller chunks
    2) Design so that the cutting is ordered
    3) Slow cutting down
    4) The MOST effective is to use the manual /nesting layout. IE rip only ONE example of what you are going to print/cut , then use the RIP to print multiple copies either nested or with manul print layout. This is HUGELY potent as the rip take almost no time at all and layouts automnatically take the width of material into account and use the least possible and the cut is ordered (we have NEVER had problems using this method)
    5) Print with crop marks , auto align and then cut.
Im assuming you are using Colorip.
Im interested in the ink story – who are the suppliers and what warrantee do they give on pumps , dampers , capping stations and heads if you sue theirs?? I really dont like the 24 hr story , we can use our stuff very soon after it comes off , even in winter , in summer its almost dry on output. Check your ink limiting on vinyls than can be ink loaded , sounds like you are depositing a helluva lot. Try reduce this for drier output.
Some cheap media never works at all , no matter what the profile, Grafitak s22P is a great vinyl for the soljet , and Starrex (x-film) 5-7 yr conformable is the best we have ever used.
Users are putting huge pressure on Roland to drop their ink prices to 1/2 so as to allow us soljet ppl to be more competitive with Arizonas etc.
Robert , your inks are Lyson , you can buy it in bulk and refill the carts (a bit fiddly – but there is a refillable cart available) The cost of inks from the Grenadier guys is way too high (higher than roland) , there are TONS of 3rd party inks available , anything that can run thru an Epson DX3 head will work. You will get flak re warrantees etc if you use 3rd party inks , albeit it’s not legal for a printer mnfgr to waiver warrantee rights if you use a SUITABLE 3rd party ink.
In terms of RIP speed , tons of factors come into play , however processor speed is the most bang for the buck in terms of speeding things up.

Thanks Rodney we will try your suggestions

I checked with Roland before changing the inks and they said that if we used the alternative ink from the start they would accept all warranty claims. However this machine uses peristaltic pumps which by their nature are short lived and we are upgrading to special pumps within the next few weeks (these pumps are avail form ink supplier who is

Robert , a correction , the inks arent from Lyson , they are from some israeli co.
Adrian I spoke to the ink guys as well , its a true solvent ink and requires some changes to tubes , pumps etc , tho nothing too serious , sounds like a job we can do and the price of the inks sounds good. I spoke to the tech guy and its not the same ink as the very agressive ones. Supposedly the “bad” things re solvents arent that bad (odour , media attack , maintenance issues??)
If Roland dont change pricing , I might just be tempted to swap when my machine comes out of warrantee??

I use em all the time for demo pics , if you have an FTP site , I can upload em – Vibrant colours etc , really shows what can be done with the machine
