Banner Hemming

We have made banners 20’x20′ by using the 2" "Killer Red" hem tape. I have no idea who makes it I just know where we get it from here in the US. It is extremely strong. We have had a banner using it outside our shop for over a year now all year long, rain, snow, 100* heat and it is still held together with a very good bond. It all depends on the application at hand, and the laws/regulations about how the banners must be done when it comes to our jobs.

i’m just trialing Power Tape instead of hemming your banner you stick a single side reinforced tape to the back edge of the banner & then eyelet through. Seems to have a nice aggressive glue to bond it. Got the first banners using it going outside this week (3mtr x 1mtr & 4.5mtr x 1.5mtr) will let you know how it fairs. They also sell power tabs but i’ve chose to use eyelets instead.

I contacted DoroTape Germany and asked for Power Tape. Their reply was, that for hemming banners they recommend DOROTAPE 465. They even sent me a test sample.

Anybody tried that? Is that the right stuff?
I’m new to hemming tapes so i don’t have anything to compare it. 😳

Power Tape isn’t a hemming tape it is more a strengthening tape which bonds to the rear of the banner, so you do not have to fold the banner over i’ve used it on a few banners & all seems to be ok. Very quick & easy to use, however does require a banner material that does not fray

I know this isn’t clever (and certainly not something to brag about) but we don’t bother hemming them. The banner material is very strong and we haven’t had a single complaint. In fact I think the hem makes the banner look untidy (honest).

That’s an interesting approach…

surely you’re more likely to suffer a tear in the banner if the eyelet
only goes through one layer though?

Or if can you guys tell me which tapes do you use or have used and find it good, cause i’m really lost with what to buy or where… 😕

OK…i got reply from the company,…that it has LOW outdoor resistance and is not recommended for banners for outside use.

And i’m just where i started… 🙄

We use a 3m tape, we get it from boldscan here in the UK, but any 3m supplier should be able to get it 4430 D – I think that is the code.

Completely agree – I wouldn’t recommend it for large banners but as of today we haven’t had any come-backs (shouldn’t have said that should I – I have just sent 21 banners over to Germany without hems, now where did I leave that piece of wood…..)

I’m late to the table with this reply but I’ve just joined the party.
First of all I admit to being biased about sewing versus banner tape because we are a sewing company. My argument is that banner tape is more expensive than sewing, takes longer to apply and is like a bad Jerry Lewis movie if you’re not very dexterous. It does a decent job of producing a hem and gives you the look and two layers to grommet through but as soon as you roll up the banner it bunches up.
I’ve watched the banner cyclone video which looks good but they only do one edge of a banner and for the price of one you can buy a wonderful sewing machine, build tables and buy all the sewing supplies you’d need for several years. What a sewing machine gives you is the ability to sew ropes, d-rings. add reinforced corners, create strong pole pockets, panel banners together, sew on velcro, and on an on. Okay, I”ll get down off my soap box. (is that just a Yank expression?)

Dave i think its a very simple process and well done to them for coming up with this machine, but i do think it has various restrictions. that said, ideal for a sign shop pumping out banners up to about 10ft long…

my main gripe on this is the cost, but that’s probably me being ignorant to how much something like this costs to put together, or should i say put together properly.
