• banner hemming tape

Posted by Paul Hodges on October 6, 2006 at 8:52 am

does anyone know where to get a good hemming tape? not talking about the usual double sided banner tape, but the more re-inforced stuff you can put on the reverse side of the edges of the banner.

    thanks.

I use a 3M double sided tape for light use banners…
Heavy banners ill use our liester banner hemming welder.

Grafityp do banner tape, but i havent tried it… I dont know/heard of many tapes but they are out there. Europoint do a tape called corribind, again i have never used it and as i type this i actually think its for bonding Correx together, (name gives me that idea ) if calling please ask this first. im not to blame 😉 :lol1: :lol1:

Corribind I have used on banners, but it is a really thick adhesive strip, and creates alot of depth to the banner hem, so not ideal. I think it would be much more suited to Corex.

I used Corribond on some flags (small) to create the sleeve for the plastic pole, but it didn’t last long 😳

    Thanks everyone,

The hemming tape I’m thinking of is the stuff I’ve
seen on the back of banners from trade suppliers, I don’t think
it’s the correx tape, it’s more like a self adhesive webbing type of tape.

Sounds a bit like Duck tape?

BTW, Geoff uses a white tape, (looks like silver Duck tape) really adhesive with threads through it to give strength, BUT it deteriorates outside really quickly, and would be worse than useless.

That does sound more like it…what i failed to mention is that it needs to be used for hemming mesh banners, which due to the nature of that particular material, leaves the tape partially exposed. I think there is a more suitable tape for this application than standard banner tape

Hey Rob, as you know we bought a Leister welder recently, really pleased with the finish…….. you ever tried mesh on it?

i havent tried mesh welding but have used it for printing.
you do get a great finish with the welder but there is allot to learn with it…
i think unless you have a permanant setup for it, and guys that know what they are doing with it, things can wrong pretty easily at a fair old cost too with its large digital banners.

my biggest gripe was the support, or lack of it i should say. but that was a couple of years ago now maybe thats changed?

    Know what you mean Rob.

We threw ourselves in at the deep end, and had 150 8′ x 2′ 6" full colour double sided banners to finish, learnt quick I tell you!

And the think is, they don’t even tell you how to do double sided!

It’s one of those things now though that we wouldn’t be without!

Chris, is your welder one of the hand held type? If so, what kind of money are they?

    Hi Paul,

This is the one we have, not exactly "hand held" but not a bad size and "self propelled", like I say, another one of those things we couldn’t be without now!

yeh i agree i wouldnt be without it chris, great bit of kit for strong joins.. however, i think some things could be made much easier if the manufacturers put a bit more thought into how the machine should/could be handled…. ive adapted mine in a couple of ways to improve handling it and i have been told others have done too… how the hell have they got round health and safety, there has to be tons of burnt digits out there! 😕

paul they cost about £1600 and that excludes finishing kit.

    Asbestos gloves!! lol

We said exactly the same thing, all that heat and no guard!

Instructions… what instructions? Saying that, we put 45 8′ x 2′ 6" double sided banners out with it today (just one man)!

    Thanks guys,

is the welder quicker to use than the normal banner tape hemming method?

I would say so yes, plus when you roll a banner up that has welded hems it doesn’t wrinkle the hems like tape does (and it looks better too).
