    hi,

I recently purchased a mutoh valuejet 1204 with onyx rip center. When I print I can see a banding effect on the media. If I look closer I can see the small hairline wave pattern of the printer in white. It’s more apparent when I set it to ‘wave’ and less when its set to ‘wow’.

I’m using the media profile that matches the gloss vinyl from a respected supplier in the uk. I’ve attached some pics below, the issue is also apparent on another gloss vinyl from a different uk company. In each case it seems to be worse on the side nearest to the head docking station.

The printer distributor has told me to use higher settings to fix problem but I’m not sure if this is the solution or if there’s a fault with the printer/media.

I’m very new to digital printing and I hope that someone here can help.

some pictures below showing the issue

thanks for your reply, the black block prints fine except the for the wavey lines, i’ve modified the contrast of the image a little to highlight the lines. Image is a little fuzzy but you should be able to see the wave pattern.

That last one Nick appears to be every 1 inch? trying to work out why

i dont have your machine, but printers are pretty much the same between them except Mutoh has this wave to eliminate banding which is their patent.

So you say that this is printed near the dockin station, does not affect the other print colours like magenta? And if you print the whole width of the roll, you get a good black to one side and then it tapers white to the other side (only on black). Then all I can think of is the carriage alignment is out, but dont adjust this yourself! if you just got this printer you should have some kinda of Maintenacne agreement with your supplier, let us know how you get on as they should come out.

hi, the effect is visible throughout the full width of the printer, i tested it with some cmyk blocks spread across the width. it seems to be worse on the carriage side.

Well I can’t see your pictures as they have been removed.

I recently had problems with our 1604 and I have noticed a few other people have had problems.
Our printer started to show banding and it turns out the sensor on the encoder was touching the encoder disk.
There is an update to the wheel that aligns the encoder disk centrally.
If the machine is out of warranty take the left hand side panel off and rotate the x axis whilst the machine is switched off.
If the clear encoder disk is out of shape or touching the sensor it can actually create a banding issue.
Also if the belt tension on the x axis motor is correct and if it has been moved the PF adjustment needs reset.
