i agree mate, i back-up all the time. i actualy have a pile of cd’s with dates on them going back a few years. i lost lots of stuff a while back and swore never again!
i even backup the boards once a week & all my outlook folder and address. even though my servers do this too… 🙄

It’s a 200gb hard drive, plugs into a spare usb port & is ready to go. Think it was about £180+vat. They also do smaller ones, not sure why I bought a 200gb when my hard disk is only 60gb! 🙂

we back our data up via a dvd-ram which works for us as the the writers have dropped in price along with the disks it works for us and we always have the disks and as most disk life is a 100 years it will see me out 😉

Hard drives are cheap these days (compared to years of work) so why not buy 2 of them and install a removeable bay in a computer.
Back up all the data to one of them and TAKE IT OFF SITE!!!!!!!
Install the other and back everything up and then run a program like 2nd copy that takes all changed data and adds it on at scheduled times (like at night) If you run a network , you can back up all the computers to this HD by installing 2nd copy or the like on them or if you have a server , you back that up to the removable drive.
Swap these drives weekly. (worst you lose is a weeks info)
Cd’s etc are good too , but are a schlep to burn and dont have a whole operating system or mrror of a drive on them and are limited in size tho they are cheaper and less susceptible to potantial damage than a physical drive.
Taking one back up off site is essential , as a fire or burglary can lose you your data and backups if all are on site.

The problem is not if a HD will fail. The problem is when.
Every HD will fail in a future. So if you want to back up always:

Use 2 HD (one is used as a mirror). There are programs to copy new items to a second HD automatically. You can do it once a day or maybe a week.

Back up that HD to DAT, DLT or DVD and make two copies.
Keep one of those outside your workplace.

If you use Mac a good option is Tri-BACKUP to make a mirror HD and Retrospect for DAT, DLT,…

And better Firewire than USB.

I’ve been watching this one as l got a DVD drive to back up all my stuff as the files l’m now getting are massive, they are generally PSD, CDR, CDL and eps.
I did a load of work for a customer in February and he now wants a few repeat bits doing.
No probs l told him, loaded the february disk in and nothing. 👿
For some reason the feb disk has gone funny.
I have retrieved some of the info but not the stuff l needed. Lost hours and hours of work. 😥 😥 😥
I’m in the process of deciding on what system to upgrade to, can anyone give me ideas and let me know what you all run on.
