I used to have an Epson printer and Sswgrass inks but had so much trouble with clogging I gave up but is there a laser printer which can use a sublimation toner or any printer for that matter which doesn’t have a clogging issue if not used regularly? Volume would be low so the printer may well be dormant for a while. I’m thinking mainly for mugs.

I believe the Ricoh printers are very good. They use a gel ink and not the clogging prone liquid that we have in our Epsons. Look on t-shirtforums.com and do a Ricoh search. Mostly positive remarks though one or two are having problems.

Yep Ricoh Alan, we were using an Epson to make up free gifts for our customers and it was only used occasionally. Replaced this with a Ricoh 5050 which stopped working after 11 months but was sipplied with a 7000 under warranty (had to pay extra). I like them, fast , easy to use, just need to get hold of one of those halogen ovens.

Hi Alan, Using the Ricoh 5050n without any problems, seems a great system which you can leave for weeks without printing with no adverse effects. Cyan nozzle sometimes plays up every now and then but a simple cyan head clean and it away again.

I’ve heard other people have had problems with the Ricoh, either not printing cleanly, problems setting it up, or breaking after a few months.

Buy from a dealer with back up and you’ll be alright.

    Cheers John

My main concern was the clogging if left for a week or so. What sublimation ink do you use I understand it is not a conventional liquid ink.

Its a gel type ink cartridge, I have left it for nearly a month without printing and the 1st print was passable, after 1 cyan head clean it was spot on.

Is it Ricoh’s own ink or is from Sawgrass or someone like that.

Sawgrass ink – its called Sublijet-R, Ricoh don’t make sublimation ink.

We just got a Ricoh printer kit, ended up being around the same price as buying a printer and bulk system and you don’t have to bother about were to put the ink bottles so for use it’s a better solution.
Comes with all the profiles etc and the Sawgrass program reverses the prints for you so you just design and print without having to remember to mirror.
