  • Applying vinyl to walls, advice needed please?

    Afternoon all

I don’t ever fit graphics to walls but today I thought I would give it a try on my own wall.

The vinyl just won’t stick and I can lift it off with ease. If I remember rightly, someone mentioned that new paint stops vinyl from sticking and to wash the wall down with something, I think it may have been watered down PVA. Am I right?

If it is watered down PVA, how much does it need to be watered down? If not then what do I need to use?

    How smooth is your wall?

Rough surface wall and you are looking at high tack vinyl.

    Hi Dan

i had an issue with a customer once i applied vinyl to the wall that was laminated with drywipe so they could draw on the wall. after a few days the vinyl literally fell off the wall i had already been worried about this and had questioned prior to fitting what paint had been used on the wall e.g Matte or silk etc and they had used gloss they told me, so i was confident the vinyl i had chosen would stick , couple of days later the vinyl fell off the wall , turns out the paint they had used was a wash and wear paint that literally stops anything sticking to it

      Oh wow.

I’m going to test a high tack vinyl and see how that goes. If that works then I’ll print and fit that.

It’s my own wall so for test purposes it’s great although I still hate wasting time.

You could give “Roughmark GF285” fr0m General Formulations a go. Haven’t yet found anything it doesn’t stick to including concrete walls!!!

I had a similar issue just recently. Tried re-applying after cleaning the wall using IPA but no joy. Eventually solved it by using a High Tack vinyl from William Smith

One of my suppliers offered me a bucket of clear wall coating meant for exactly this problem a year or two ago, as it is now pretty widespread and its a crapshoot whether the paint contains the silicone additive or not.

Apparently even some pigments of even the same line of paint prevent sticking while others are fine.

As has been said, either look out for this wall coating (cant remember what it was called) or use high tack vinyl. I use the hight tack arlon on painted walls as a matter of course – just in case. Its no more expensive.

We use Arlon 8200 for wall text & graphics. Seems to do the trick.
