    Hi Guys,

I managed to source some VHB tape and would like to apply this to sheets on acylic which will then be laser cut.

Could someone advise the best way to appy the VHB tape to the sheets ?

The sheets are 600mm Wide and so is the Roll of tape, can I buy something to make this a easy process ?? Like a cold laminator ?

Hopefully one of you can help…

    Cheers

600mm wide roll of tape? are you sure or am i picking you up wrong on this?

VHB tape comes in different types for various surfaces, so make sure your buying the correct one based on the surface your adhering it too.

The process is pretty straightforward, CLEAN immaculate using isopropynol or meths. both surface and surface of that your sticking it too. cross-score the surface and clean again. once in place warm with a heat gun. doesnt need to be hot, just warm as this promotes adhesion. allow a bonding period too before erecting.

we also use a rubber roller wheel to press down even .

wherever you buy this from should also include a directions of application sheet.

    Thanks Robert,

Yeah 600mm tape !! I was looking to apply 600mm tape to 600mm wide sheets of Acrylic then laser cut the characters I need from the Acrylic so they would all have a self adhesive backing.

I just wondered if there was an easier way that applying the tape manually.

    Cheers

where is the acrylic being used, applied too?

i would be wary of lasering right through the tape, it may just melt it or give a bad edge finish?

I’m not overly sure but just chipping in a warning… foamex can’t be passers as it produces harmful gasses. Isn’t VHB tape a form of pvc in a sense?

Good tips guys, Maybe a cnc cutter would be a better option.

the router will also chew the tape.

why does it have to be VHB seems like over kill. a good foam stick tape would suffice but depends on application.

I`m not sure, VHB tape was recommended to me on the forum. I managed to find a supplier who can do it for about £7 a sqm. This was not a 3M product but something similar.

The application is on car number plates, so will be exposed to all conditions, car washes etc..

VHB tape is over kill and expensive for a number plate.
Plus, you only need a few bits on the rear of a number plate. not 100% coverage.
a decent double sided foam stick tape will suffice.

number plate blanks can be bought pretty cheap too. no need to use acrylic sheet and cut to size unless you have a specific reason?

    Gavin,

Are you trying to replicate the style of the ultratek number plates?

    Hi David,

Yes that is what I am going to try and achieve, it’s for a car dealership that’s looking for them. We already supply all there number plates.

Can you not set up a trade account and just supply them via that?

I’m not 100% sure but I also think all numberplates have to meet BS conditions so maybe check with them on process.

I’d have thought the better option would be to tensor the letters onto the acrylic?
