i have and do use both,

clear is fine if it’s something you’re layering right away, but it you plan on storing anything for any amount of time, then it’s no good, the stuff stretches as you pull it off the roll (and mine weren’t a cheap brand !) and over a period of a few days it will remember it’s original place and shrink back, causing the decals to form valleys under the tape,

i found this out when i had a load of stickers i cut for a show, left over, i had about 40 decals left, and all were junk after a few weeks !

paper tape, no problems except sometimes when storing decals, they sometimes lift on corners, or curl smaller decals up, and of course, not so easy to line stuff up without registration marks.

99% for me is paper though, i’m still trying to find my favourite, have used a few unbranded, not terrible i admit, the ritrama isn’t bad either (though i’m pretty certain it was listed as perfect tear 😮 (?) ), now trying the oracle paper tape, it’s not too bad but does tend to curl on the edges.

Europoint Display is a Division of Paper Co.

I use only oracal app tape. I use the paper tape, i hate the clear with a passion but i guess its down to self preference. Clear is excellent for aligning multi-layer jobs, but other than that its a pain to work with. 😀

i also get most supplies from europoint but the best app tape I have used is dorotapes paper tape, used this recently and it was superb, just do a google search.

I keep a stock of both clear and paper, my prefence is paper but clear is great for jobs needing aligning etc.

    cheers

Lynn, ill be honest… i have tried so many application tapes i got sick of them. god knows how many suppliers came into me asking would i try their tapes. they gave good competitive prices and a nice sample to try out. i am not exaggerating but i must have tried 6 brands from various suppliers in a short time. the first couple of orders were always spot on. but as time went on the tapes deteriorated in quality. i don’t know why, my opinion was the foot was now in the door with a low price on a good tape. but then we were being given lower grade stuff as time went on… i don’t know if i am being fair saying lower grade, maybe same grade but bye its shelf life, i don’t honestly know. one thing for sure they were not consistent.
at the time, although i bought allot of oracal vinyl, i seldom used their tapes. due to the above problems, i started to give them a try… although i do agree you get curling/lifting of the excess paper it is never an issue for us as we fit nearly everything our self.
the biggest problem from lost of the tapes i tried was the tape shearing when it was being removed. comes away in little strips and bits in the cold.
we tried one tape that was taking longer to remove than appling the vinyl.
others had very little tack and didnt lift the letters well…

Been using paper for a long time. Currently (last 18 months) been using the Ritrama hi-tack P200 paper tape from William Smith. Good tape, good price.

I’ve tried some REALLY bad stuff over the years, normally a supplier has a special offer so you buy a log or two – and can’t use it as it’s just crap.

Also bought a half log of clear last time to use for awkward overlays with similar colours. Yes, I still hate it with a passion – it’s not as grippy as I’d like and releases from the text / logos long before I’m happy – unlike tape that can be snapped back off.

    Paper for me!!

We use mostly paper app tape (Conform R) from Metamark.
The clear we use for laying up or for anything cut in silver vinyl.
Cant see silver when masked in paper!!

I use both, 90% of the time I use paper tape from Europoint which does curl at the edges a bit but most of what I do gets cut and applied by me straight away so its not really a problem. Tried some of the more expensive brands but it wasn’t really much better for what I do. I keep a small roll (400mm) of clear tape for small multi-layer work but if I am doing larger multi-layer work I tend to use paper tape and registration marks.
