  • Anyone using the thick xpres photolux panels?

For the life of me I cant get these bastards to press right 👿

Done 5 so far & everyone has came out with a cloudy patch some where on it 🙁 tried light press, heavy press, centre of press bed, front of press bed…..arghhh

Seems like they are warping while being pressed and because they are so thick you cant get enough pressure to keep them flat 😕

Anyone else having issues with them or is it just me?

Ive just done 6 of these today and all were fine. Im using a swing away press at the lowest pressure setting, heat taping the image and pressing at 200 for 50 seconds.

Was it the thick or thin ones you done Paul ?

It’s the wall mount panels that’s giving me grief (1.5cm)

Sorry Neil mine were the free standing one. They are quite thick though and ill measure tomorrow.

I was a bit concerned with the panel pivoting on the stand, but never had an issue with it.

The free standing ones come out great, It’s the thicker wall mounts that’s giving me the grief 😥 I’ll raise it with xpres at the P&P show and see what they say.

Do you find that the cloudy part appears to be coming from the same part of the press? You might have a small indentation in the flat part of the heat platen or a cooler spot. The larger panels need a hotter and longer dwell time to print properly. If you buy the panels as a complete pack then there is a flyer that comes with the panels giving this advice.

The cloudy patch sounds like either there isn’t enough heat getting to that part or as the inks gas off the paper there isn’t enough time for them to bond properly. What temp and time are you pressing for?

I’ve pressed the panels in various positions on the bed just in case it was this but to no avail. pressing @ 200 for 60-70 secs.

What I have noticed is the panels are pretty flat going into the press but quite badly warped once pressed & I reckon they are actually warping during the pressing and this could be what’s causing the cool spot/loss of pressure?

what about pressing the reverse first Neil. Then flip over, apply your image and press again.

Maybe worth a try Mark, I’m just gonna put them to the side until next week before I chuck one through the window. 🙄

Neil, I had a problem printing some clocks. I used the same solution that Mark suggested. They are about one inch thick and with a big hole in the area where the mechanism sits on the back side. To get the proper print on the front I had put a supplied block of wood in the hole and then press the back side for over a minute at full temperature , flip it over and then press the front . Incredibly fiddly as the small block must stay in place and it all very , very hot. But it works.
I also have a swing press so that helps too.
    Earl.
