  • Anyone tried laminating vehicle after applying vinyl?

Posted by Ian Muir on October 9, 2009 at 11:23 am

    Hi

Have an idea to print onto different coloured vinyls, applying to vehicle as a printed vector cut as it were and then laminating to protect the printed portions (if that makes sense :lol1: )….

Anyone done this or any thoughts welcome

    Thanks

    Ian :lol1:

Okay, perhaps my original post is causing some confusion because of the poor way I have tried to explain my intentions…. I shall elucidate…. ah that’s better…. :lol1:

Just bought a pick up with metallic paint, want to try something a little different from normal to advertise ourselves on it, don’t want the now ‘getting tired look’ of the full colour all singing-all dancing print/wrap.

So thought about using some metallic vinyls in subtle shades (e.g. oracal 900 series), printing on to them some background shadings/ motifs and then applying these to the pick up… laminating over all the vinyl for protection.

If I laminated each separate colour of the metalic vinyl and then applied to the pick up I get the feeling that the joins would end up looking like a jigsaw puzzle instead of a single unit that might result from laminating in one sheet over the whole applied design…

That’s the sort of thing I would appreciate feedback upon folks

as a test i would do what you intend on a bit of board then over laminate it all and see the result.
i think you may be disappointed with the air gap under the lam where the two layers of vinyl are.

Well everywhere the overlaminate goes over an edge of the printed vinyl you’ll get an air gap and the same anywhere you have butted 2 pieces together. Why overlaminate it anyway? I have printed material on my van, with no protection, to see how long it lasted and 3 years on the colour matches the duplicate material that’s been kept in the drawer.

Wouldn’t it damage the vehicle when you put it through the laminator 😕

    Stupid boy!! :lol1: :lol1:

Not sure if there is one but if there is can you not print onto a metallic white….laminate…..then decal cut? I know your not supposed to print onto non printable vinyl but this may work. You won’t have any joins and it will all lay flat and look more professional.

    Thanks for input…

Yes Chris, experimentation probably is the way forward… was tending towards thinking of a liquid laminate until Steves point of ‘why bother to laminate at all’, especially if it’s our vehicle and we can pull off and apply a new design in a year or so + printer is solvent so ink is more hardy….. and of course thanks to Phill, hadn’t thought about if putting the pick up through a laminator might invalidate the warranty (of both the vehicle and the laminator) ……. :lol1:

Well I’ve seen somewhere Karl that there is a printable reflective so can’t see why there shouldn’t be a printable metallic out there I suppose…

I print on Amaris reflective regularly with no problems mate. I’ve rang them to see if they do a metallic white but they don’t. 😕

After plenty research went for Nissan Navara double cab Liam , much the best pick up around especially post 2004 (D40 engine), earlier ones (D22) engines suspect to blowing up occasionally.

Got a 2005 with only 30K on it, non farmer or contractor (known owner), ended up it’s an Outlaw model with premium pack fitted from new, not really sure what that is but for sure it’s got leather and chrome everywhere + electric everythings…

Would post pic but at moment it’s just like any other smokey grey navara outlaw and don’t think I can put piccy on this site unless I pay to join in any case.

Sure goin to have fun signin it up anyways, should look the part when done I hope.

I wasnt confused by what you were trying to explain, i was confused as to why anyone would go through this procedure/route in the first place.

Only now are "some" manufacturers beginning to produce a digital white reflective due to demand. I doubt very much we will see digital metallic in production any time soon, especially in various colours?

as an option, if you MUST have metalic…

Laminate WHITE Metalic vinyl with Digital Clear.
Print the entire thing in one go, and contour cut right after if needed.
Apply application tape and fit, Job done!

To increase the life and quality of your job. laminate with clear after the printing stage and put back in machine for a cntour cut if needed.
Apply application tape and fit, Job done!

Look forward to seeing it in the portfolio section once you have completed.

    Ian,

Try playing around with printing on Avery 546 or similar. This prints a treat on the SP – Grey becomes Charcoal, Blue becomes Metallic blue etc.

After printing (and laminating) you can apply the graphics, then apply any white bits (and any other non-metallic colour) you may need on top.

Not much help, but I have seen a "metallic" white vinyl. It looks like a Pearl white. I dont know if it can be printed, or its durability. If memory serves me right, it was by DC Fix. Anyways, if the vinyl is not printable, you can always laminate it with a printable clear BEFORE printing, and then follow up with a liquid lam after printing. (another layer of clear may make the vinyl a tad thick!) The stuff was sold by a hardware store, so I doubt it’s suitability as a sign product.

I also use a White reflective made in (gulp) china on my SP. I guess this can pass as "metallic white" since it does not reflect much!! It is branded as "DM Reflectice Sheeting" It cuts, prints, weeds and applies very well. Eighteen month old signs in the middle of the desert shows no obvious signs of deterioration, so I guess durability of the vinyl will be on par with that of the Eco Solvent ink used on it….

And Rob thought he can go on and on……
