  • Anyone know if you can run versaworks from an external drive

Posted by Joe McNamara on September 16, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    Hi all,

I’ve had the computer crash today and I have a load of work to print tomorrow 🙄 🙄

I had to go out and but a new PC and I got a HDD enclosure for the hard drive from the dead one so I could access my work on the original drive.(this was the C: drive in the crashed PC)

    Now, here’s the thing….
I can’t run versaworks from the external drive – it gives an error message that versaworks is not properly installed, but it’s all there (on the external drive).

I’ve even tried copying the whole versaworks folder from the external drive to the new pc and put it into the C:program files folder, but it still ives the same message.

To make matters worse, I can’t get internet on the new PC so I can’t just download VW from the roland site and I can’t find the original Versaworks disk either!!!! 👿 👿 👿

Anyone know if it can be run from the external drive?

Otherwise I’ll have to phone Roland first thing in the morning.

Yes, I have spent all of Sunday at work, and I may as well have stayed at home and banged my head against the wall for 10 hours instead!!!

    Cheers
    Joe

The problem is that VW is not installed on the new pc so will not work, you need to reinstall it on the new pc.

ps if you can down load VW from the web then down load it with the pc you are on now?

    Thanks for the quick replies,

It’s running XP pro on the new PC.

Even if I could download VW from Roland’s site I still have the same problem.

The external drive has full versaworks 2.2 (whatever the latest one is) so if I download the program again onto this PC i’m using now (my laptop) I’d still have to transfer it via an external drive to the PC at work, which is pretty much where I’m at now anyway!

AAARRRGGGGGHHHH! F3ckin computers (hot) (hot) (hot) 👿

I think I might drag the crashed one behind the van for a couple of hours tomorrow !!! :lol1: :lol1:

no, if you get VW then you can put it on the external drive then copy it to the new pc and install it, you only have a installed VW on the old dick at the moment that will not work.

sorry if i have miss understood but copy this file to a cd. and apply to your new computer.
    http://dg4.roland.co.jp/en/color.html#rvwlocalup

i am not to sure but the original VW may have to be on the drive you are loading to.
i think that i will not work from the ex hard drive is because its probably looking for a Dll file in the system dir that aint there

    chris

i presume i have the correct printer joe vp300 ?

Maybe I’m being stupid here – but couldn’t you just configure your new pc to boot up from the external drive instead? Then you should be able to run it just as it did before on your old PC

No you’re not being stupid Phil, not at all mate.

I tried that as well but as the external drive is run through USB, it doesn’t show up in the BIOS boot options!

I’ve spent all day in the shop banging my head against a brick wall!!!!

I think I’ve tried nearly every option.

What about if you try switching the hard drives?

well, i am little confused here. A computer had a hard drive in it, connected via sata normally, so you need to install ‘software’ on the computer, so stick CD in and install it.

Never ever use a external harddrive as a form of system hard drive, it should never be done ever, you will have performance and disconnection issues and possible theft/loosing it.

As external drive can get knocked about they will fail this is why they are backup drives, seen it so often so that is my advice to you.

Also they are getting cheap now, more worrying as how many gigabyte per inch is it?

Got in this morning and changed the hard drives over, but now it won’t boot up.

It goes to a black screen that gives you the option of safe mode etc then I pick one, and it just goes off and on again and comes back to the same screen.

    God, I hate computers sometimes.

Think you need a VW disk mate.

PS did you make it a master or a slave on the hard drive settings?

Sorry Joe – I had thought that if you switched the drives over your new pc would simply boot up from the new drive without any problems 😳

i use something called mojopac that is a mobile version of xp that can be installed on any memory device with a bigger capacity than 4gb.. it then runs your installed software inside the existing pcs structure. this may help in the future but not now.

also versaworks can be downloaded from rolanddg.be.
