    Hi

    Anyone know anything about VPN’s

Have a small peer to peer network in the office and want to access this from home. Have done the following but not working. Any ideas??

Have set up ‘accept incoming connection’ on the desired PC on the LAN (XP)
Have Ok’d port 1723 as an exception in the Windows Firewall
Have setup router passthrough for port 1723 on my modem router
Have set up a VPN network connection on my home laptop (Vista)

Try to connect and nothing happens? Any pointers on this?

    Cheers
    Macky

Did you set it up for L2TP over IPSec or PPTP? Also are you connecting using Ad Hoc (straight from computer to computer) or are you going through an ISP’s router? Wireless?

I’m not a networking expert by any means, and I’m on a Mac. I think the problem is probably related to the security protocols / firewall settings. Here are two websites one discusses how to set up the VPN using PPTP and Vista, the other talks about problems with the Vista setup.

It’s also possible that something isn’t set up right on the server-side. You could also try the route that Peter gave and use some type of third party app, although I’m sure you trying to avoid doing that if possible. Good luck anyway. Let us know if you figure it out. I always seem to run into people that have the same type of problem somewhere down the line.

    Thanks all

the Hamanchi software from logmein.com works really well.

Can now work from home late at night rather than sitting in a cold office down at the workshop!!
