anyone know about trees?
Posted by Gavin MacMillan on November 14, 2008 at 12:40 pmTotally random but I’ve just had a acer sycamore planted out the front of my house, I’ve looked it up and it going to be a monster, it’s only about 3m away from my house… should I be worried about the roots hitting the founds?
I thought a signmaking forum was obviously the best place to ask this question!

a large deciduous tree’s roots will often spread as far as the tree’s branches, and if possible, just as deep, i would probably be concerned.

Yup – the trees roots will almost certainly damaged the foundations. Fortunately you asked this question on a signmakers forum and I have the solution for you.
Poison the roots by pouring solvent ink into the ground around the tree 😕

Cheers guys.
Nice one Phill, been wondering what to do with the waste ink!
It’s actually a cracking tree and is 5years old so not the cheapest. They had to be planted as part of planning consent for the new houses in the village. All in all a good thing and it’ll all look nice, might just re-locate it to the back garden!

I do that with my waste ink, pour it over the nettles it’s as good as round-up.

Been fobbed of by the people who planted them and told to contact planning myself… just left a message with a tree surgeon we do quite a bit of work for, he’s a good guy and will give me some advice before I have to start letter writing!

Had this problem with a line of conifers planted 1m away from my gable end. They were about 20ft tall and caused subsidence, not by root growth but by taking all moisture out of the ground around the founds.
