There is a new Apple Mac store that just opened in Glasgow, looks great and loads of decent info on Mac’s……… looks like they are making it more mainstream so that’s a good thing

I’m really tempted to buy one…… been thinking about it for a for a while but now with the store opened they are giving away training and advice

Anyone else temped to buy a Mac lately?

I just did mate, well a couple of months back now…
I decided if i was going to do it at all, i wanted to do it right… so opted for the Mac Pro with 24inch flat screen, extra hard drive, ramm etc ontop of the standard. paid about £2600+vat…
trying to get used to it has been difficult because i only use it to edit videos. when you work all day on PC’s, then jump on a mac and try and learn how to find your way around it, whilst trying to learn complex software (Final Cut Pro), its harder than you think. well i thought so anyway :lol1:
i began to wish i hadnt bothered, and for a while the computer and software lay idle. a few weeks back i got back into it and kept at it, i also registered online getting video tutorials on the software and the like. i am glad to say i am very glad i did… im now getting into the swing of it. to the point ide say i wish i had done before… i love how they operate and how everything is integrated seamlessly. I also by my bi-weekly mac magazines like i-create etc
as i type this post up my mac is working away behind me on another desk, converting new video demos im working on at the moment… hoping folk will see a difference in the quality of the next batch of videos to go on the boards. if they do, its making the videos better, the ease in editing them better, so for me its money very well spent. even if they are a tad pricey. :lol1:
you get what you pay for in the end i guess!

As long as your willing to get used to the change, ide say… Go for it! 😉

Shouldn’t think so John. I would guess that’s PC only.

Lot’s of stuff is available though. Illustrator for instance.

Can’t wait for the iPhone. 😀

All new Macs run Windows XP / Vista. Either with Boot Camp, which means restarting the computer and running it as a complete Windows PC, no Mac stuff, or with Parallels (Separate program) which runs Windows in a Window 😀 so you have best of both worlds. Signlab would run as a Windows progam on your Mac desktop. As Peter said the only problem you may have is with the Dongle. No serial ports but if it’s a USB Dongle it may be ok.

All true boys – but what’s the point?

The whole point of a Mac is hardware/operating system compatibility and ease of use. By running Windows on it you lose most of that benefit.

If a computer needs to be used to run a Windows programme full time, then I think that even I would buy a PC. However, if I wanted a dedicated signmaking programme, then the one that ran natively on a Mac would be the one I would buy. No question.

I also use a new 24" imac and it is the best thing ever, it did not take me long to use as I used to use mac’s a few years back at my old job. All my mates who have seen mine and played with it for a few minutes want one and can’t believe how much better than a PC it is.

It is well worth it and you will not be disappointed.

    cheers

I also run macs, always have for flexisign, Illustrator and photoshop. I only use a pc for my accounts software which is windows only. I did run it on my mac using virtual pc but found it slow, probably due to insufficient memory.

Have you seen the new touchscreen ipod, I still have a 3rd gen ipod that’s still working well but I do fancy the new one.

Looking forward to a 24" imac myself as soon as I can, we have a mac store in Cardiff and when I’m there I go in and drool like a little kid in a sweetshop.

    Sad aye!!

Yes John, I know, why run Windows. Afraid I have to run CorelDraw X3. The last version they did for the Mac was woeful, but I do use a dedicated PC for plotter. I must swap over to Illustrator soon.

Warren, what software do you use for your signs and plotter?

    Hi David

I run Illustrator CS3 and Macsign for cutting which came with my summa cutter. It is not the full version but I do everything in Illustrator and then copy and paste in to Macsign and then cut. never had a problem yet, the only features available in the basic program is rotate and move but if you set it all up before I simple paste and cut.

    cheers

Neil, we changed over to MYOB back in 1996 for the reason that we wanted to do our accounts on a Mac. The difference between that and the Sage we used previously was like night and day.

It says that in today’s Daily Mail. Also that it will be exclusive to Carphone Warehouse.

Which is odd because there is no mention of it on Carphone Warehouse’s website and I would have thought they would be shouting it from the rooftops.

    Strange. (?)

Apple are terribly secretive. The email to reporters went along the lines of ‘Mums the word’. I would expect Carphone Warehouse to be sworn to secrecy. The rooftops will be shouted from tomorrow, don’t worry 😀

Just wish they went with Orange.

John, I use clearly bookkeeping which my accountant asked me to use so it makes it easier for him to do my accounts. I would prefer to use something on my mac tho as it would streamline things a little.

    Hi John mate,

Just got this code off the hotukdeals website for a £20.00 off over £200. spent online, better than nothing, you could go in store and do your homework then purchase online or ask them to price match with online.

Just to add my 2p worth I’ve got an intel imac 20" use it for photoshop & illustrator.

    Code – ENTMZGJPVJ
    Web site – http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showth … p?p=932277

No Neil. That’s the last thing you want. Your accountant understanding your books.

Another benefit of changing to MYOB was that our accountant DIDN’T understand what I was up to, and just had to accept the figures we gave him.

Give him discs so that he can go digging in places I don’t want him to look? Oh deary me, no. 😀

I’ve been using Macs for years. I had to use a PC for about 2 years working doing some design work, but I do still prefer a Mac. Up until about a year and a half ago I was using one of the original G4 towers (Sawtooth). I would have probably at least about 11 apps open all of the time (Mail, Internet, Photoshop, Acrobat, Distiller, Illustrator, FreeHand MX, Suitcase (now I use FontExplorer), iChat & iCalendar to name a few. I rarely bogged down even with an older machine like that. It had 1 gig of ram though. The company got me a 20" iMac of the G5 variety. I wish it were one with the Intel chip, but it wasn’t my choice. It’s really nice to be able to open a 11" x 17" document and barely have to scroll around to see everything. So, barring that your dongle won’t work, I would recommend the iMac. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Ha ha! That’s pretty funny, Andy! That review ranks up there with with a number of other FUD-based articles that try to disparage Apple products. For some insightful articles, I’ve enjoyed Roughly Drafted the past few months for their comparison of iPhone with equivalent smartphone products. The site appears to be down for maintenance at the moment, but definitely take a look.

With respect to running SignLab through an Intel-based Mac, I’ve been using Windows XP through Boot Camp for the past year without issues. Others have commented that Parallels has worked fine as well. You do need a USB dongle. There are a collection of reviews for Windows virtual machine applications here:

Me too, been using Macs since 92 for signmaking, still have and use a machine I bought back in 95 (9500) awesome, still on its original battery and making signs.

    Faultless throughout.
