  • anyone came across colour changing vinyl?

Posted by Lee Ballard on October 29, 2005 at 11:59 am

A friend of mine claims to have seen some vinyl graphics on a car which changes colour like the metallic paint jobs some boy/girl racers have.(Hope that makes sense)

Anyone come across this vinyl before? If so who supplies it?

    Thanks

there are some really nice glitter and metalic vinyls out there mate. lots of the reputable suppliers offer them.
im guessing your talking about prismatic type foils/vinyl we use it now and again but it is for short term use, but i do see it on vans pretty often.

ill try think were we buy from, slips me just now. i know coburn are main source worldwide for this sorta thing!

I have a couple rolls of the shade shifter vinyl. It is really cool but doesn’t have a full spectrum of colors like the chameleon paint used on cars (changes just between 2 colors, but lots of shades between). It is a cast film but I think that it is only rated for 4-5 years outdoors, and yes it is very expensive, (I think a 15″ X 50 yd. roll is around $650). I have used it only a few times and on cars, I find it hard to see it change colors (you need to look at it from many different angles to see a difference). Give it a try, I think that it is sold in 5, 10, and 50 yd rolls, and is Avery Shade-Shifter vinyl. Good Luck

Spandex do a range called Colour Change if it is the ‘flip’ or ‘chameleon’ style you’re after? 😉

These styles tend to work better on a curved surface. This gives the colour change a greater range of reflection and therefore shows off the varied colour more effectively 😀 . This is why you always see demo samples on cylinders, not on flat graphics.

You can see the spec of the vinyl HERE

I hope this is of some help?

    Regards,

    Bruce.

It was made by 3M but they have since discontinued it in vinyl form, I think it is still avail as a non adhesive film and is used for high quality wrapping products. When it was available it was horribly expensive approx £30 a linear metre for 610mm wide. We did one shop in Kirkcaldy High Street (it is stil there, the sign looks a different colour from diferent angles (3M claimed it to be a 6 month vinyl for interior use but it has been outside for over 2 years and still works)

Not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but the stuff we use for our race car graphics looks like this

It comes on 500mm wide rolls and cost us under a fiver per linear metre when buying a 10m roll from ATC in Lancs ( 01706 633 043 ) It took us a while to track down as a lot of places don’t stock this kind of ‘fancy’ stuff and if they do it’s really pricey. Can’t tell you what it’s called though as we just ask for the chromaflair flippy holographic wierd stuff 😀

    Hope this helps 🙂
