  • Anyone any idea’s on how to make neon’s?

Posted by -steve on September 29, 2004 at 11:59 am

    Hi All,

We’ve got a customer who who is after an illuminated panel he "saw it in a bar".
The way he described it to me was that the panel was changing colours from behind. I thought it was maybe different coloured LED strips fading in and out in sequence behind an opaque acrylic sheet?
Anyone any idea’s of how it’s done, or seen anything similar??
Spoke to Ashby and they couldn’t shed any light on it. (no pun intended).

    cheers
    stevie

    hi steve
i “think” you are after folk that do LUMINART sorta alternative to neon and comes in a liquid that forms the neon look & colours, then ist basicaly lit like a lightboax in the rear. the reason i say this is that about 2 years ago there was a boom in pub signs being made like this.. i think it may have beena devision of autac that did that though and they are now gone.
not sure who took over from that…
if its changing colours rather than the actual lights being a colour its probably leds but i think there is a name for that type.. not sure… ill have a think.

Rob, I doubt it’s Luminart that he’s seen – we never bloody sold any! I have seen what is being described, at Sign UK a few years back. Made by a German company called Kostrom Oy (really!) If you’ve ever seen them at a trade show you will know it because they always gave beer away; their stand was basically a bar! Anyway, the product was graphics made entirely out of leds that could be programmed to do more or less anything, change colours etc.

my aunt has a very tacky looking lamp that is fibre optic. has hundreds of little strands that bounce about giving a ranbow of colours. at the end of each strand it glows… 😕 im sure you will have seen the ones i mean being sold in shops around glasgow :lol1: :lol1: anyway..
i think the others have answered your question better than i have 😳 :lol1:

We have a 3 watt diode we import from China , its on a 2cm x 2cm x 6mm circuit board chip , it has a life of 50 000 hours and has 10 programs and changes to 7 colours , you can do all sorts of stuff with it (fading , blinking etc) , it works off 9v transformer or battery and ca be built into anything.
If you put it on the edge of 6-8mm perspex and engrave or laser the pex , it floods the pex with light and the engraving glows , its potent enough to light about a 40 x 40 cm pex panel. Its not tacky and makes for AMAZING point of sales displays, the Diode etc without transformer costs us about 10 quid- this is NOT an led , its a surface mount diode and the face is flat, its a LOT more potent than a LED. We use it singly mopstly , but for rather big areas , we use it in strip form .
You get a better effect than neon , at about 1/2 the price and the low voltage is really safe
