  • Anybody using Xero Accounting software?

Posted by Warren Beard on February 7, 2011 at 8:38 pm

    Is anybody using this?

A long shot but would love to know if anybody has used it and also used Clarity and can compare.

Comments on Clarity also wanted, I am going to start using something but want to make sure I use something that is decent.

    cheers

I have no experience in either software systems, but as far as i know xero is an on line based accounting package, not sure about Clarity, But if its a stand alone program then i would consider using that.
My view is i’m not keen on having a PC connected to the Internet that has sensitive and important data on.

Yes Xero is online, any more views on then on using Online vs standalone software?

Is Clarity as good as they harp on about or is it just sales talk?

Is Clarity an accounting package? I had a quick look but looks like it will sync with your accounting package rather than being one?

No idea about Clarity but were moving our accounting system from MYOB to Xero.

Clarity is not an accounting program but can export invoices to Sage.
It’s just a contact manager and management information system.
So you can produce quotes, job sheets and invoices etc all in one package.
It’s not cheap and not particularly adaptable without expensive support. In fact they won’t even tell you the time of day without paid support.

Quotewerks ( http://www.quotewerks.com/index.asp )does the same thing but is far more adaptable. In fact it’s so adaptable to any business type that it provides endless tweaking. Needs some computer savvy or support is available at a cost. There’s a useful forum supported by Quotewerks suppliers and specialists.

For a small business wanting very straightforward accounting software, you really can’t beat Solar Accounts ( http://www.solaraccounts.co.uk/ ).
You purchase the software outright (about £79 if you search around), can have unlimited company files, handles UK VAT, and (important to me), the information is stored on your computer, not on a distant server somewhere. Free email and web support. 30 day free trial worth a look.

    Hey Warren,

I can’t really comment from personal experience, but I know that we switched from MYOB to Xero about 6 months ago because the programme "talked" a lot better with some other integrated software we use.

The guys seem pretty happy with it, and from what I’ve seen it appears to be a lot easier to extract data from.

Sorry, can’t really be anymore helpful other than to say it has been a positive experience and the changeover was painless.

    Good luck.

Thanks all for the feedback. Yes after ready more about Clarity it’s not an accounting software so never mind that for now.

Glad to hear some positive responses back about Xero, I have started the free trial to see what it’s like and so far seems nice (better than my Excel spread sheets at the moment 🙄 )

Will happily look at others if there are some recommendations you guys use on a daily basis.

    cheers

hm. after reading some of the website it appears to have been quite well developed…it’s got me thinking as well.

Is it web browser based or an web-app that downloads when u sign up?

Does it do VAT and VAT Forms?

Can it handle Payroll for 10 people ?

How easy is it to use with a regular printer? I always got bothered with this one with web-browsers… have they reconmended Firefox or something?

Spyware on a computer might worry me

More importantly, anyone here really using Xero?

Dave it doesn’t do payroll directly but it does integrate with online payroll systems.

I like it because I am building a custom production and work flow system and integrating to the Xero API seems a lot easier then using the MYOB ODBC connector. Never mind that I can check my accounts from anywhere and multiple users can be logged in at the same time.

Not really Dave. I was in the works with two companies to use their software to provide our production and workflow systems and both let me down in terms of their features and their failure to implement their own systems to meet my business requirements.

I don’t have any other options other then to develop our own system. So its a really great chance for me to integrate the accounting, payroll systems along with our production system so when we grow our business we can have the business intelligence to make the correct business decisions.

Having clean API’s to integrate with makes it a lot easier to accomplish this. Our credit card processing API is very simple to use. Now if I only could find a courier company who provided an API so we could automate consignment notices and book deliveries I’d be very happy.

Yep…I’ve been using it for about 6 months now and I love it. I have a good mate who has developed a whole system that makes my office basically paperless. He includes payroll (for Aus) and also an excellent online archive system that’s approved by the ATO.

You know the pricing for the payroll component.

I don’t know what he charges mate. I’ll get Ben to give you a ring and he can tell you. I pay just over $400 per month for all of my bookkeeping with him and I’ve been rapt with his service.

If you’re already using Xero then you’re half way there 😉
