    Hi everyone,

We have been asked to tender for street nameplates for our local council and there are two things in the tender that we dont understand. Do any of you know what 11 SWG, Alocrom 100 treated aluminium is? We realise that the alocrom 100 is some type of metal coating but is it possible to apply this treatment ourselves or would it have to be outsourced? Also is it possible to purchase sheets of aluminium already treated? What does the 11 SWG mean? Is this the weight and if so what thickness of aluminium would this be? Again all help much appreciated.

    Hi
    just had a quick check 11 swg = 2.3mm & Alocrom 100 is a coating as in

Alocrom 100 – Bluish/green coating which is very durable and ideal for protecting against oxidation even in humid conditions.

Be a bit careful with your pricing on this one as the price of aluminium tends to go up and down alot and we aren’t talking a couple of bob a sheet.
Any aluminium supplier will be able to give you a price, if you ask for 11swg they will know what you are looking for. I would also ask them if they can cut it for you as well and get a price cut to the size you require. Aluminium is better cut with a guillotine rather then by panel saw, if you do decide to cut it yourself you will need a blade with a negative rake, these blades are not cheap and you will still have to finish the edges, better to have it supplied cut to size.

rather than the cost of the ali you will struggle more to find someone who will do the alocrom coating for you. A powdercoaters would be my first port of call.

edit: a bit more research shows it is an anodised coating so it will require to be dipped in a solution and will need a hole (or holes) to suspend it to ensure all edges and faces are covered. I doubt if you could buy it ready coated (but I stand to be corrected..!)

The alocrom coating is probably the spec of the raw sheet and you would need a supplier who would provide cut to size for the job. Although aluminum itself has a very tough oxide layer it is very susceptible to salt water corrosion which is why the coating has been specified. I’m guessing the cut edge will also require to be coated for this reason.

Try http://www.aluminiumdirect.co.uk/?referrer=google&gclid=CK-2xd2A0YoCFSR6EAodPFpEcA they might point you in the right direction.

Oh…look under the sheet material tab…..
