im completely guessing here but i think apa stuff is about £8-£10 a square metre & the avery stuff from cox is about £17-£20 a square metre

We buy quite alot of truck curtain side vinyl and are in the middle of a large project of lorries now, all curtain. Only APA and Avery make it. APA are somewhat cheaper than the Avery range bought from either Cox or Spandex, but colours can become a problem at times from APA so we only buy Avery (Signflex) when we have to. 🙄
Let me know what you want to produce maybe we have some spare material we can pass on to you! or if its full colour I know where to get it printed.

Lamby …. Thanks for that offer m8, much appreciated. The order (if it comes) is for 100 of 12″x6″ (or 300x150mm if yer prefer). Suppose at 610 wide & plotting it all I would need around 12 metres so probably out of range of an “offcut job” 😀 😀 But ….. if it materialises & you want to supply us & can give a price, I would rather pay a few quid more & get it from a uksg member than bother with the usual hassles of dealing with another supplier (we buy only from Vic Design & they don’t do it :()

451 is the banner vinyl, The 851 is the new Oracal Premium cast vinyl.

I was told by kevin at europoint London that it was suitable for curtain siders. I’d like to see it tested though

here’s what it says:
~ thickness 50 microns
~ weathering stability upto 10 years
~ excellent conformability over corrugations & rivets
~ unsurpassed dimensional stability
~ 91 standard colours (nice blues and greens)
~ colour matching service for 300 m2
~ solvent based polyacrylic permanent adhesive

though nothing about curtain siders

yep.. i beleive this type of cast vinyl, “if as good as the 751 calendar, which im more than sure it is!” is more than capable of giving avery 900 a run for its money.. and avery recommend that for wrapping! something im still very wary of 😕
having said this.. “no matter what they say” regarding truck cape applications i would “not” advise it.. 😉

Did you do that trailer youself?.

I noticed Lamby preferred the Avery “Signflex” stuff as oppose to the APA stuff. Are you of the same opinion?.

I have 2 curtain siders here on my premises just now waiting for lettering and i`m finally gonna take the plunge and try this PVC curtain vinyl.

I called Cox Plastics who said they can supply “Signflex” at 610mm at any quantity as long as the order is over £100.00 at £13.14 per metre.

They also want a £5.00 charge for slitting the 1230mm roll to 610mm.

This price interests me but i`m *very* apprehensive of this type of vinyl. For the last 8 years i`ve cut stencils and inked these curtains and i`ve never had 1 comeback in all that time. i`m curious as to which product you prefer, and why.

Basically i need some confidence building 🙂

my fitters fitted it i just sit behind the desk!!!, seriously i do get out now and again and find the APA truck vinyl ok and the price is very good, we find that signflex is harder to apply much thinner, had no problems with APA done approx 20 trailers this year they do tend to sell out quickly and had to get the last order direct from Italy took 4 days

Glad to hear you are giving a different type of vinyl application a try!

Point to remember with curtain vinyl, it ain’t like other vinyls! Its very soft
and there are absolutley no second chances with it, once its down its down.
In the early days of us applying this type of vinylwe would have 3 of us on site, 1 to apply, 1 to hold and someone pushing a board from inside the trailer to give stability. Smaller letters wern’t a problem.
We also make sure we tighten up the curtain before we even start to clean the vinyl areas, the tighter the curtain the better.

The price of £13.14 for 610mm sounds astromical and you should watch your prices and your profit if you are gonna take the vinyl route, especially if your customers are used to mask and paint prices.

Definatley try APA first. As I said before we only use Avery if we get stuck on colours but having said that we don’t pay near the price you have been quoted. We still paint and mask now and then and sometimes mix it. I will post a piccie of one of the trailers we painted in the summer.

The way we would price this would be
: asses the amount of vinyl and tape needed, get a price from the supplier, add your profit.
: work out how long production fellas would take to cut and prepare, charged at your hourly rate.
: See how many fitters you need and charge at your hourly rate. (don’t forget travel time etc.

I reckon we would charge around the £800 – £850 mark for one off of these.

price for the job in the photo was £1100 plus vat that included the barn doors and a few legal bits, as Rising states you must tension the curtains nice and tight and equally, new curtains are fine this one was, but older ones need a lot of cleaning and preping so charge more

Interesting price mate. I went on a guesti-mate of using about 17M of 1220mm vinyl, 3 hours cut and prep and about 4 hours to fit. Not accounting for artwork, travel etc and any other messing about.

What do you mean on legal bits?

Sometimes difficult on BIG lorries as we sometimes come across body builders and curtain manufacturers “own signmakers” who seem to price and produce these trailer graphics as a bleedin hobby.
Also curtain graphics are being printed direct to curtain, with though only a what, 3 year outdoor life?
Nice to hear what you priced it at though.
