another newbie
Posted by Colin Smith on November 17, 2005 at 6:53 pmHello from another newbie, I am possibly looking at starting a small vinyl business, my father is a traditional signwriter (gold leaf, fine lining etc) now semi retired when he needs vinyls he has to sub it out. I am a print engineer by trade (traditional offset and now digital imaging) so have experience of file formats etc. Any info on what kit to buy, most reliable etc will be gratefully received. In return I can help with any printing issues, offset or digital. I have factory trained on Epson large format inkjet printers so can help with these.

welcome aboard mate.
rolands are good machines, very reliable. im not pleased with tech support/after sales though, so i decided to switch to graphtec a good few years back now. best thing i done. im now about to buy my second graphtec in the next couple of weeks. it will replace my roland as the new graphtec has contour cutting fascilities for digital printing etc. it will be a 48 inch wide one i think… as we already have the 54inch wide graphtec at the mo. great machines, very reliable and tech support is very good. -
Done it!!!
Got a signpal puma 2, just been playing so far (the other half wont let me set it all up in the spare bedroom until after xmas in case we have guests).
I got the signpal apprentice version software with it but it seems very basic and a lot of features missing, so will probably upgrade to something else later. Also got corel draw 12 and illustrator (can I export directly to the cutter)? .Not really had time to experiment yet (normal work keeps getting in the way) so dont laugh if I sound thick. 😳 -
Hello & welcome Colin,
You can cut directly from Corel Draw to any SignPal machine, as for the Apprentice software there are three other levels all higher than Apprentice that you can upgrade to.
Any questions on the Puma II or Apprentice just ask.

Nigel,
where can I get the info to tell me how to cut straight from corel to a puma ll ?Cheers,
CherylHi Colin,
welcome aboard ! 😀 -
Cheryl if you have not got the windows print driver disk then you will need to ring Grafityp so they can e-mail one over. (Technical Dept. ask for Paul Shrives)
When in Corel you select line thickness to the smallest setting ( I think its hairline / outline) then you need to manually reduce the line thickness to 0.001 mm. This way the cutter will see it as a single line and will cut it out, beware though anything set above 0.001 mm and the cutter will not respond to any job sent.
I’m at home now taking the rest of my holidays but I will look in each day so if you need any further help just post.
Nigel

Many thanks Nigel.
I’ll send Paul an e-mail now.
Merry Christmas.
