  • Am I too expensive??

Posted by Earl Smith on February 2, 2010 at 1:53 pm

This is a question aimed at all the t-shirt printers on here.
I have just had a customer in my shop asking for the price of printing Football Shirts. They want a one colour print on the front, which is the name of the sponsor, plus what they do ( hairdresser) plus the address, web address and telephone number. On the back the name and number. 30 pieces , so the numbers run from 1 to 30. The shirts are polyester so I have to use a subi stop white vinyl so the colour doesnt come through.
I quoted 7 pounds 50 plus VAT each. They said I was way too expensive.
    Whats your thoughts??

that price was to print only?

sounds about right to me, heat presses are not a cheap item to run, they’re hardly high up on the list of economy electric products! my old press takes about 40mins to reach a stable and fairly even temp across the plate, thats 40 mins of a pair of kettle boiling non stop, then the time it’s printing!

tell him a fiver each and tell him to ask his mrs how to use an iron!

Yes Hugh its print only. The biggest time consuming part is the weeding of the front part. I reckoned on using 30cm of vinyl off the roll ( 50cm wide) for each shirt. Dont know how much vinyl is over there but here its around 7 pounds a running metre. So, not much in it for me after you think about the time involved.
    Earl.

I would agree Earl, not sure what i pay, think it’s around ££6.50pm including vat, like you say though…. it’s not cheap when you take time into account!

Its someone wanting to get "the best deal". Stick to your guns as you’re about right on price (I would have been slightly higher). No point being a busy fool, get on with a better paid job, chances are they will come back.

Ive given up on that game, "I will be beaten on price" :lol1: , however quality and after sales is second to none…………

Not expensive at all – as said, – someone looking for a v.cheapy (which some stupid bugger will do) bluff em that’s what I do be open – if you can gte a better deal tell them to go elsewhere but say make sure they use the right material – you can use cheaper stuff but colour will come through it will peel etc. Cant see anyone beating that price tell em. Our prices going up next week so you better decide this week!

Problem with doing cheapies is you dont get that good well priced you were promised or assumed you would get – you just get them back wanting the same again as well as their mates coming in wanting the same

Thanks for your input guys. I thought I was right about my prices. My oppo in town is more expensive and the other nearest is 20 miles away. He is cheaper but he is in a massive shopping center and needs to be a busy fool to get the customers in. Normally my price is 9 pounds plus VAT (19% here) but its a local team so I gave a small discount. Maybe he will come back but I am in no rush. He will only want it done yesterday.
    Thanks again
    Earl

dont worry about it Earl, unless you start to loose a lot of quotes, then you are to expensive, compared to the competition.
people dont think quality with t shirts, just price.

To be too expensive you have to have a comparable, so who did your client compare you to?

If he did not compare, he obviously means its too expensive for him, offer to sell him a felt tip pen to put his own numbers on.
